To me the these wild horses are a source of divine energy, a wonderous mystery connected to many other creatures with whom they share the land. They have gifted to me a restoration of wonder, a new awareness of the struggle that exists between man and beast and his constant need to dominate other creatures and each other. They are pure energy, a divine beauty each with their own personality, uniqueness and spirit. We must look not from the mind, but from the soul for compassion is the thread that connects us all. I pray that those innocent spirits that gave their lives are not in vain and that those who cannot see will find the eyes to see because of their sacrifice. I pray they just look more closely at the beauty that is the wild horse-the mustangs of Calico.

Louie, you’re right. I found out tonight that my prayers have finally been answered for at least some Curly horses I know, too. And I alerted the Curly Mustang Association to the Curly mare that’s been caught, so she’ll find a home, as will any others that prove to also be Curly or have Curly genes. Its not most of the horses, and its not the ideal of leaving them HOME ON THE RANGE, but at least a few will escape long term holding.

I shed lots of tears and thought a lot of things while holding my vigil last night. Am having a very emotional day today, but I know that things have got to get better, especially knowing that there are so many others out there who feel the same. For Courage and Hope Springs Eternal, just know that you and your family members have not died in vain. There is a special place in heaven for you all and all the people who care but there is also a special place in hell for all those who dont.

THERE IS AN ANTI-HORSE PERSON COMMENTING ON THE LONAHAN PRESS–CHALLENGING THE DATA THAT SHOWS THE CORPORATE INTERESTS AND PERCENTAGES OF GRAZING PERMITS THAT THEY CONTROL. ANYONE HAVE ANY MORE REFERENCES THAT I CAN SUBMIT TO THAT PAPER? HE NEEDS TO BE BOMBARDED WITH REFERENCES.

Putting the BLM’s wild horse and burro program on a sustainable track is one of Secretary Salazar’s top priorities. Today the BLM finds itself in the position of needing to gather thousands of wild horses from overpopulated herds on Western public rangelands at a time when public demand for adoptable horses has declined. This has left more than 34,000 wild horses and burros in holding facilities that cost approximately $35 million to operate out of a FY 2010 wild horse budget of $64 million.
Taking note of the BLM’s holding costs and recognizing the agency’s limited management options concerning unadoptable horses, the Government Accountability Office issued a report in October 2008 that found the Bureau to be at a “critical crossroads.” In response to this situation, Secretary Salazar announced on Oct. 7, 2009, a new plan to put the BLM’s wild horse and burro program on a sustainable track. The strategy emphasizes a combination of aggressive fertility control and the relocation of wild horses to new preserves in the Midwest or Eastern portions of the United States as a means to accelerate the attainment of appropriate management population levels. To advance the Secretary’s efforts toward program sustainability, the President’s FY 2011 BLM budget proposal requests $75.7 million for the wild horse and burro program, a $12 million increase over the FY 2010 level of $64 million. The budget proposal makes a separate, but related land-acquisition funding request of $42.5 million for the purchase of land for one wild horse preserve.

So glad that the vigils have begun.
I just spoke to my Rep’s aide, and the money is a key talking point. This issue appears to be on the radar screen.
Spending this kind of money for a program that is so unpopular, corrupt and badly run, and so cruel, is an outrage.
An increase of $12M over $64Million is almost 20%. That’s no spending freeze! We need to carry the message of fiscal responsibility to our Congressionals, that this is a waste of taxpayer dollars, that we are not in favor of spending a hundred million a year – counting feeding captive horses – to damage American native heritage herds beyond repair.
A roundup moratorium is a win-win – saves money, and stops the cruelty.

if blm is grumbling about money it takes to care for horses already in captive why cant they just make the deal with madeline pickens so she can take them – and as for that injured foal someone tried to take to doctor — the blm does not want the public to know or see how badly injured some of these horses are – and it wouldnt surprise me if they are happy when the mares lose their foals – maybe all along they planned it to stress out the most horses that would die – the fewer they have to care for the better for them is they way they see it

apparently Mrs. Pickens is asking the BLM to pay 500.00 a head for 20,000 horse to be managed on her sanctuary. I sincerely hope this is not the case.

I believe she is asking the BLM to pay whatever it pays to all private contractors, that apparently is the holdup in her planned sanctuary, originally, she was going tp apy for them herself, but for some reason, came to the decision to ask for the upkeep money, I will try to find out the link to the article i read about this,

Yes, but they had continued to negotiate also. We should just ask where it stands. She did ask for that money per year, I believe. Keeping them on Western soil will be best for their health and hooves and spirits. mar
