I saw this morning that the BLM said in the same paragraph that the filly was both found dead and euthanized. I wondered which is was. Why is the vet not determining the causes of these deaths? Of course, I know ALL of the deaths are because of the round ups. All these beautiful horses would be alive today if they had not be rounded up.

This is so sad. What is sadder is our government officials. Lack of respect for the public. Lack of humanity. Inability to question themselves or their motives. Freedom to ignore the judgement of a Federal Judge.
All their actions lead the citizen/taxpayer/voter/advocates to begin speculations as to “what is behind this.” Incompetent handling of the horses during this round up appears to be just the tip of the iceberg here. . . one feels instinctively that there is a more sinister activity going on here. . . greater even than possible energy, mineral or cattle speculations. . . perhaps something more. . . .scientifically oriented, biological, and perhaps in the area of defense. . . .need I say more?

In a report posted in October 2008 by the GAO, the Bureau states that while deaths occur, they are a rarity.
It seems, since that report, they have become a inevitability.

I heard last week that the BLM ran the hooves off this little guy. And then a day or two later it was amended. One can surmise that this is yet another lie out of the mouths of the BLM. They don’t want to look bad or be acused of animal abuse.
Sorry but no matter if they ran the hooves off or they sloughed off later because of the roundup–someone bozoed really bad. So yet another little colt finds his way into my heart and is another reason I will continue to go to rallies that are local to me.
Sadly we also see the abuse via Elyse’s videos. I’m sorry I realize these so called wranglers have a tough job to do. But the horses they are working with are already frightened–that’s why they don’t want to go into that nasty dark place (the trailer). No matter how softly you hit a horse when he’s in that mindframe–it is abuse. He nows associates being scared witless with being punished and hit for NO REASON. There has to be a better way.
I suggest calling this little foal that so couragelously fought to keep up with his mom and family be called Courage. I don’t want to promote him in a way that lessens his life. I want to promote his courage and that of other wild horses. If we can make people aware of little Courage and what the BLM did to him so callously then maybe his life won’t be in vain. I sincerely hope that others take this the way it was intended.

What do you mean take it the way it was intended? The BLM is the Bureau of LAND management. They are not interested in any management of the horses in any way that could be construed as “humane” or ethical. That is very apparent to me. No has has compassion or the balls to speak up for the horses if there is any compassionate person in the government under the BLM. How can this go on year after year after year after year? The deaths are outrageously cruel and inhumane from hooves separating from the bone to broken legs, throat ripped out from ropes, to foals left to die out on the range because they couldn’t keep up. This is all illegal! I can’t understand why this is allowed to continue….there must be so much corruption in so many arms of the government I can’t begin to imagine.

I’m sorry Jennifer, perhaps you misunderstood what I was saying. Or I didn’t explain it very well.
I wanted to call the little foal Courage. When I said I hoped others would take it the way I intended it was about naming the foal. Not anything to do with the Buffonery of Lunatic Minds (BLM)
I totally agree with you about the BLM not being for the horses. For me, a classic case of how little they care is the fact that they are trying to rewrite history about little Courage.
And let’s not forget about Freedom who fought so valiantly for his freedom. He wanted no part of humans, the corrals, a fate unknown. He was willing to put his family on the line for what He treasured most–HIS FREEDOM.

I’ve done so much research like many others and I have been in tears most every day since the Calico gather began. It has consumed me and I am in complete and utter shock that the human race can be so cruel to animals. It’s not just the horses, we are inhumane to parrots in the rain forest, Whales in the sea etc. It really makes me feel hopeless at times as I imagine a lot of others can relate. But these horses are so dear to me. I spent 5 days with them a couple of summers ago and fell in love. I couldn’t believe it when I first became informed that the gather was imminent. I will take my vacation this June and drive from Aptos, Ca. to see if by chance my beautiful band of horses eludes the glass monsters. I pray for them every day. Let’s all rise up and spread the word and clear up all of the misinformation out there. Let’s educate and guide others to write letters, make phone calls, do whatever it takes to save them. I am even making “Freedom” necklaces for Freedom the stallion who escaped! I want everyone to know his story and I pray for him to be strong and survive.

It just dawned on me that this was what happened to Flint. Flint has always been my favorite and my daughter likes to tell people that I say it’s because he was the ugly boy who grew up to be pretty. To look at it that way and think that he may have never had the chance to grow into the handsome guy he is breaks my heart all over again.

Lori/Mar-I can completely relate deeply. What is also missing is love and all these people’s hearts. Whether or not you believe in a God, love is certainly missing from the hearts of all those that interact with these wild horses. If they had a heart, these beautiful, innocent sentient being would not be dying needlessly.

Thank you Morgan! When he says “Loving requires a heart alive and awake and free” this embodies the wild horses. They have such heart! They give such joy in their gifts of beauty and spirit. Every day I mourn this atrocity that is happening to this boundless spirit of love-the mustang. Why can’t they hear us? I wrote to Heather Emmons at the BLM today asking about the windbreakers. No reply. I am going to rewrite the piece from the U of NE about winter care for horses. It is a perfect piece on what the horses need to survive in winter. Considering what’s happening, maybe we should concentrate on the numbers left in the wild and their genetic viability and the fact that their ranges will be planted with plants they can’t eat (namely, because they’ll be poisoned) & their water sources stopped up or tainted and get ready to get our loved ones on the ENDANGERED SPECIES LIST!! I also found it interesting that the BLM cites at least 20 miscarriages, blaming them on the poor condition of the mares, however, I believe the actual reason IS the roundup, galloping for miles when heavily pregnant can only lead to complications and miscarriages, I have seen mares in starved condition give birth to healthy foals; they give all their sustenance to the baby inside them, but thier condition does not necessarily cause them to abort their babies, hard exercise I think is more the reason, so now the death toll from this horrid mess is close to 50,
That poor baby, the pain he was in before he was shot(I love how the BLM says euthanized, to make it seem humane) i can only imagine, my older mare has trouble walking when the ground freezes hard and she has to walk on the ruts, I can only imagine the pain she’d been in if I made her run around the pasture for miles, how do these people live with themselves?

When I heard about the miscarriages and 4 more mares dead, I had to come here. they are dropping like flies. Does the judge know this? This should be stopped now. How many have died on the range of broken bones? This is not what ANY government agency is meant to do with a National Treasure. Now it is more than I can bear. One day I think I can take any thing. But this much death and loss? These are fine horses. They do not need this from this nation. I will never forget this deep betrayal. All I want is to manage these wild ones without violence and without helicopters. There are ways and it is criminal to avoid them and murder these animals for profit. mar

This is so bizarre. I read these gather updates first thing every day. They seem to be changing way back. They are talking about stallions being found dead. I don’t remember reading about that previously. Does anyone remember seeing two dead stallions before? And what about the mare that ran into a gate and broke her neck? Come on! Why would the mare just run into a gate and my God how fast would this animal have to be running to break her freakin neck!!!! I also do not recall ever reading that a foal was born at the facility and then was killed because they decided it wouldn’t thrive. These people are outright killers and murderers. I for one would like to see pictures on every single animal and necropsies on all the dead horses. Since they are so deceitful, I don’t believe anything they say to be truthful.
I am taking print screen of everything tonight. I’m sure the cloud foundation is doing this but I swear if you go way back, they have changed. I don’t remember there being all these deaths almost every day. As far as poor body conditions, on
12/30 they say “all of the horses are in normal condition for winter gather with a few noted lesser conditions.”
12/31 they say “many of the horses are in good body condition.”
1/5 “most of the animals are thin to moderately thin but in overall good health.”
1/6 “They are in good flesh with no signs of upper respiratory.”
Now all of a sudden they are in poor condition. I noticed they have not commented in some time about the condition untill today. I also agree having seen the photo of the heavily pregnant mare in 2007 with blood coming out of her mouth that they are having miscarriages due to the round ups. No doubt. I’m sure Carol, Pam and Ginger could comment on whether they see that kind of miscarriages in the wild under normal conditions, especially Ginger since she has been filming so long. It is just common sense and doesn’t take a huge jump in logic to go “oh, gee, running 10+ miles at a full run/gallop over volcanic rock/rough terrain might cause problems in pregnant mares.” But of course, they are happy I’m sure with the all these deaths. Less horses to worry about. Better for them.
According to the University of NE Cooperative Extension “Winter Care for Horses” guide, “it may be difficult for horses to increase body condition during extremely cold weather. Additionally, during long bouts of freezing temperatures, most horses will experience some loss of body condition, no matter how well they are fed.” So these “thin” horses could just that point in case. They have gone thru some cold temperatures and have lost some body condition. It doesn’t mean they couldn’t have regain that body condition with increased food intake over a prolonged period of time. They have have not been in that “thin” condition for long at all. They have no idea because they didn’t know what they looked like before the round up. None of these horses should be murdered because they are “thin” nor should they be killed because they have not beefed up according to some nebulous time schedule.
The Winter Care for Horses guide also states “horses acclimate to winter conditions extremely well but need to be able to escape the bitter winds and moisture. The net effects (of providing shelter) are that horses will require less feed, can more easily maintain body weight and are less stressed. These effects make the cost of sheds and windbreakers more attractive by reducing feed bills and reducing stress-related sickness.” I’m going to write to JoLynn Worley (775-861-6515) and Doran Sanchez (775-861-6629) regarding the windbreakers since Heather is out of the office until 2/1. Thank God they put up the windbreakers in the sick pens. Small miracles!

After I got offline last night I was thinking…not a good thing to do when one is trying to settle down for the night…
Anyway I wanted to do something special for Little Courage. I think its fair to say that most of us hurt because of the actions of the BLM, and what they did to him.
Rallies are great. I think its bringing awareness to the general public. But I feel like I needed to do more. So I thought perhaps if others are of a same like and mind we could have vigil. Maybe Tues or Wed night from 5 to7 pm West Coast Time. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. Whatever your belief system is–whether you use a rote prayer or light candles, or even have a kind thought or two for Courage I ask that you set aside that time for Courage. Whatever you decide to do it doesn’t have to take the whole two hours. It could even be 3 minutes. I wanted to set aside a bigger block of time so that those caught in traffic or whatever there circumstances are–they could participate and not feel like they were late or something.
The horses need us. Wash isn’t listening. The Buffonery of Lunatic Mis-management isn’t listening. We need something a whole lot stronger than the both of them. A prayer for peace for the horses–in their current circumstances. Prayers that Wash will finally start to listen. Prayers that the Buffonery of Lunatic Mis-management will listen–those are things WE can do. They don’t cost any money. And I suspect its a whole lot more powerful than anything Wash could come up with.

My heart was on the ground after I read of this baby, and also about the aborted foals, and other 22 deaths as a result of this roundup;

AMEN SISTER! First I pray every morning and every evening for them. But I also pray for Sue Cattoor and the wranglers and every human being that interacts with them that an “infusion of compassion” or that they would be infused with compassion for these horses. I get so angry at what they are doing but got reminded by an ainmal communicator friend that those people need prayer for compassion too despite not liking them for what they are doing.
I think your idea is great! I’m in ILLINOIS so that time works for me. Way to go Margaret! I too have a tough time every freakin night stopping the thoughts of the horses! ha ha. Glad I’m not the only one 🙂

Boycott corporate beef. Look for source-verified, grass-fed beef. Family ranchers graze on leased acreages ($20 per animal/month), and BLM is not necessarily their friend. I interviewed a multi-generational beef rancher last weekend–didn’t have much good to say about the BLM either. And he raises grass-fed, no hormone, no antibiotic, no cattle-prod beef. There is more out there every day. We just have to search it out.

If you do not know where your beef is coming from never be afraid to ask. You can even request that the butcher who weighs and wraps beef to put a Grass Fed and origins sticker on it. If more people did this you would know what you should about what you eat. In an organic market it is the same; ask and you will know!! It should matter to you. Don’t let the market decide, help the market to decide in favor of what you want. It does work. They are happy, usually, to answer any questions. mar

I think the us is beginning to have a cattle surplus ! the gov.’s plan; such as usda plans to have us” live on Beef; is failing thank goodness; the only way Beef should be “consumed if at all; is:

Honestly what I think is the most important is that WE are ALL coming together for the horses. A prayer, a thought, light some candles–I think the most important thing is that WE become a louder stronger voice for the horses.
We are unighting. Together we are strong. And our voice is for those who can’t speak human.

Keep fighting for them! I just joined “The wild Horse Preservation League” here in Northern Nevada. I am donating my time to making signs for upcoming rallies. It is an honor to become a member of such a wonderful and hard at work advocate group for our wild herds!
I am online everyday for so long trying to educate myself and others, networking to make the snowball grow. The snowball to roll over the corruption and to renew protections is getting bigger and I feel a new strength and glory arriving in each day. Keep the energy up and the vision pure!

I would be very inclined to agree with your statement. But, then I think of the police and National Guard going door to door in New Orleans in the Hurrcane Katrina aftermath. They seized all legally owned firearms from law abiding citizens because the unlawful citizens were looting. The National Guard was allowed to retract our American right to bear arms & protect ourselves WITHOUT any due legal process.

If you have Netflix, highly recommend Howard Zinn: You can’t be Neutral on a Moving Train. You can watch it on your computer.
Howard Zinn was all about NON VIOLENCE. It is people in NUMBERS that will expose the truth.
Having said that, everyone needs to understand the consequences of actions and decide thier own limitations – what they can do and can’t do. It is wrong to lull people into actions without full disclosure – that is as wrong as what we are fighting, peacefully, against.
You don’t need to agree with Mr. Zinn’s politics (not sure he actually has any), but his message is very meaningful to what we are trying to accomplish, at least in “mood”. Watch it, you’ll understand what I mean.
Not justifying anything, just stating a fact – New Orleans, they were not just looting, they were shooting at rescuers. I know fire fighters from here that went there to help and got shot at – just because they were in uniform? I sure don’t understand people.

Louie, yes, our nation is in deep hurt, caused by corporate greed, and us being seduced into thinking we all have to be rich “right now”! Check out your portfolios – how many arms related stocks to you own? How many corporate stocks are in there that graze cattle on the wild horses public lands – our public lands? Energy like Ruby pipeline? We can control that!
Howard Zinn is exaclty what we need. Already recommended his Netflix for those who have not heard him – you can watch it on your computer.
I repeat myself again, as Ginger Kathrens said, this is not just about Wild Horses, it is about the state of our democracy and government. Wild Horses should be a wake up call to anyone that doubts the depths that persons in power of government agencies can stoop to, always have, always will, without the WILL of the People watching and challenging against greed and power. Perhaps Americas Wild Horses will be a symbol to future generations, one way or the other, of the consequences of apathy and greed.

In theory, boycotting the beef industry or the American Cattle Association is a great idea. This idea to boycott has been discussed numerous times. However, it is vital to understand:
1. the cattle grazing on public lands only amount to 3% of the American and international supply of all beef products. The majority of beef consumed by humans domestically, sold for human consumption abroad, used for animal food and the beef by-products created (such as leather) is harvested from enormous feedlots you find in Texas or Colorado. The 3% free range don’t even make a dent in the hamburger supply at your local McDonalds.
2. Pro-Mustang/Burro advocates and anti-slaughter of equines activists are just too small in number yet in comparison to the millions of beef consumers world wide
3. the root of the issue with Mustang and Burro extinction is LAND and what products can be gleened from the land. Who controls the land now? Why do they want the Mustangs removed? What will be considered a ‘nuisance’ next? How in God’s name can our federal government authorizing the destruction of public land, national parks, American wildlife and the private citizen’s personal freedoms? They have been increasingly getting away with these wicked deeds since the very first government was formed by European settlers. The root of the Mustang/Burro issue we are so passionate about is energy creation & American debt to foreign interests.

Our forefathers threw tea in the bay for freedom, it mattered not where the tea was grown.
A beef boycott is for freedom, and it matters not where the cows are fattened up for slaughter.
When the beef industry demands the mustangs freedom, they will be freed. BLM is beef!
This action is free, it needs no monetary contributions, no attorneys or politicians, only for us to choose wisely what we eat.
And the beauty of freedom, is we can choose what we eat.
But not the poor mustangs anymore.

There is a group of us (mostly conservative in/from CA) who will be joining together to pray for the situation regarding the wild mustangs & burro’s too. If you’d like to join in and/or know of anyone else who would, please do.. Also pass this on.
I have done a little research on this*see links below! They is most insightful! There are many more regarding different states..
The government seems to be have promised in the past that the open land would be to support the mustangs and burros. They had set aside that land (lots of it), because of open grazing of cattle and other livestock( not that they don’t need that too) the Feds are going back on that promise, so now it’s time to start putting down large amounts of horses and burros.. I have wondered too what else they are getting from this? You know that I am not one of those crazies, but this seems to be the way the Feds are looking at things now…Forget the commitments of the past and aim for a “new America”… They are trying to get money where ever they can or redirect monies, that’s what they are doing, doesn’t seem to matter what we the people want does it! So, whatever you feel led to do is good! A good ole’ saying! Follow the Money!

Here’s Heather’s reply from BLM on windbreakers for the horses:
Hi Jennifer. We have installed windbreaks on the 12 hospital pens. The regular corral areas will not have windbreaks installed as we don’t normally put them on our short-term holding corrals. However, the topography at the Fallon Facility is such that the pens have hills in them in a way that naturally provides windbreaks for the horses.

Has anyone been out to the Fallon Facility? I’d like to see what she’s talking about as far as “naturally providing windbreaks.”
Also, I noted on January 29 from the Gather page: “Receiving horses from the Granite HMA today. Four mares in poor condition died today, 2 euthanized and 2 found dead.” So four that came in from Granite died and 2 were found dead? This is so vague and doesn’t tell you were they were found dead. Obviously if they are receiving them how could they be “found dead?” Very upsetting that they are so vague about the deaths and constantly attributing them to “thin conditions” when it could be many reasons for the deaths. Since they are not doing necropsies there is no way to know for sure what they died of.
I know dogs and cats can die of a “broken heart.” Can horses?

Heather,
Unfortunately, I am not able to come to the facility at this time. Please explain to me why the BLM is continuously going back and revising the Gather Updates after they have been posted. I am tracking them and copying them so I have all the copies of original and changed versions. I’d like to know why the information is incorrect on a regular basis that it then is revised. Seems to be a lack of competence on the part of the BLM.
Also, I’d like to know what the horses are dying of. To say found one horse dead isn’t good enough. I’d also like to know why they are euthanized instead just “euthanized.” That’s not good enough. These horses are not eating due to being in pens and being forced to live in completely inhumane and cruel conditions of which they have never known before. “A horse’s condition is more compromised in the winter, especially older horses, pregnant horses or those nursing foals. The additional stress of roundup, capture and separation only adds to their fragile condition. What is so sad is that not only do many of these horses have to endure a helicopter chase, capture and transport…some will be euthanized in the end. Some horses are too stressed out to eat hay or drink out of troughs when they are in corrals. These free ranging herd animals suffer more than we can see. They are wild horses, they are not even ‘tamed’ wild horses. They are born, live and die on the range and I am sure if they could speak they would prefer to live out their lives…season to season, on their range with their herd.” – Neda DeMayo, Founder, CEO Return to Freedom, American Wild Horse Sanctuary.
We know that the trauma of the round up is causing “hoof sloughs” of which there really is no such thing. The colts have soft hooves and therefore cannot withstand galloping for 10-15 miles on lava rock, rocks, frozen ground, rough terrain. This is common sense. Why is the BLM trying to kill the horses on purpose? That is exactly what it is coming across as. Or they are too ignorant to know about the anatomy of a horse’s hoof. So since they apparently have no knowledge of a hoof, please inform them that in foals and yearlings, the digital cushion is composed of fibro-fatty, soft tissue. In the adult horse, it hardens into a fibrocartilagineous tissue. Therefore, since the foals and yearlings have fibro-fatty, soft tissue, they cannot withstand the stampedes and long distance on such hard terrain. Forcing these horses to gallop or run for non-rested long periods of time is killing the foals and yearlings. This is cruel and inhumane and must stop NOW. By the way, mustangs are famous for their hoof strength-as adults.
Why do the wranglers and helicopters need to stampede them to the corrals? The pregnant mares are aborting due to trauma from the round ups-not lack of forage. That is pure bs. The BLM thinks the public is fairly stupid I gather. This is all going to go to court. And when it does there is going to be hell to pay. I would suggest you start documenting and photographing everything. Some human is going to become the scapegoat. It’s going to get very ugly.
Since this is my money that is paying to kill the horses, fly the helicopters, pay the vet, feed the horses, etc. I want better information on the Gather Updates. They also need to be correct at posting. This constant changing of information is completely unacceptable.
