Elyse Gardner has posted new reports and videos on the Humane Observer blog (photo below by Elyse Gardner, see more on her blog)
New Article from the Desert Independent about IDA v. Ken Salazar case.
Please post comments on these articles, the media isn’t getting it right today!
Extinction Countdown from Scientific American “Does the US Do a Good Job Managing Wild Horses? Yea or Neigh?” — your comments needed!
“Mustang Redemption” from Mother Jones Magazine, this is not a well-researched piece -author writes “they’ll breed like rabbits fed Viagra” – wild horse herds do not double in size every 4 years, 10% growth is a more realistic average but herds vary. A call needs to be made for a balanced article worthy of this magazine, this article falls short.
Comments needed on the misinformation here too- both horses and cattle eat about the same and cattle do far more damage! http://www.lahontanvalleynews.com/article/20100126/NEWS/100129896/1055&ParentProfile=1045
Please vote for a moratorium on roundups here — STOP cruel BLM roundups of WILD HORSES and Burros
Reminders: *Eagle roundup comments due 1/27, *Antelope Roundup scoping comments due 1/27 (both huge Nevada roundups) + Phoenix and Tucson protests on Saturday, January 30th!!

One of the things that Elyse mentions is the use of plastic bag whips to get horses moving.
From personal experience — We have an APHA mare who was once tormented with plastic bags; obvious by her reaction to ANYTHING plastic that’s around her.
We’ve had her for 6 years and have worked patiently with her, but she still avoids and even becomes aggressive toward plastic. (She once tried to “kill” a plastic grocery bag by furiously pawing it into the ground.)
So, to teach these wild horses — who already face training challenges — to be afraid of plastic is nothing short of animal abuse, in my opinion. The BLM is creating potential, serious behavior problems for these animals just with this one action and should be monitored very closely to see what else they’re doing to mistreat our wild horses.
Adopters should be aware of this issue and be prepared to work on it.
Thanks, Elyse, for all of your good work!

Nora, So true. We must never forget these abuses and use them in our arguments and comments and articles. It is negligent to all wild ones who can be treated better at every turn, to be put up for adoption and handled by people who are wanting a good horse. The expression ‘spoil a good horse’ means this. The contractors are sanctioned to abuse in the name of BLM. Why are they operating outside the law? mar

Mother Jones should know better. mar

There is more from Elyse from the 26th. I think she has been behind. I hope she can tell us more about the deaths. She has named the calico Calico stallion “Tomahawk” nice. mar

Funny thing about promoting the Wild Horse program where the inmates train the horses. In order for their to be a program there have to still be wild horses to supply it! which there won’t be at this rate. And it’s sadly ironic as some of what we’ve seen done to the horses by the government contractors seems downright criminal.
I’ve been horrified what I’ve seen of the video’s of the contractors and the roundups. Why is it I can turn on Animal Planet and see cop shows with people PROSECUTED for this stuff,, but here a government agency is hiring people to do it? Do people take these jobs because they have a sadistic urge to torment horses or something? Or are they to greedy and ignorant to care? Does the BLM troll the list of horse abuse cases to find people to hire cut rate?

My sentiments too!! Animal cruelty is a crime no matter the degree of brutality. However, I think of Animal Planet and how those with lesser brutality and number of animals than the BLM are hauled in. Yes, horrifying.
I bet not many would take a job to helicopter roundups, as it is at its basic level, inhumane. The BLM did hire criminals. And from videos and comments, these helicopter people have no respect for horses and do enjoy tormenting the horses in a roundup…& on the ground. And yes, they are GREEDY & IGNORANT. I have never heard a compassionate or intelligent word from them in articles or video.
And I remain in shock and disbelief at the inaction of the
HUMANE Society of the United States (HSUS). I continue to write and call the HSUS about their “hear no evil, see no evil” of the BLM, DOI, Salazar.
January 27, 2010 at 10:59 pm |
My sentiments exactly! I too have wondered why the BLM and their contractors are allowed to do some of the things they do. If the BLM is unaware of this behavior, they should check it out. How ever I really think they don’t care. After all the petitions, protest, and letters…. still nothing is happening. We just can’t stop until these horses are protected

that’s why i keep hounding the humane society and the aspca about the treatment of the horses and then in fallon no shelter for the horses – i read the article in the desert paper that the judge said no more roundups until the court case is settled yet the blm continues to round up horses – do they think they are above the law – also read on one website that a little girl was killed riding a mustang because a helicopter flew over and scared the horse – they never forget the abuse they suffer at the hands of the blm – they shd be made to round them up on horseback – bet they couldn’t catch very many that way

Don’t quite know where to post this article but I believe it is pretty typical of the BLM publicity spin and we need to know where the “opposition” is coming from. Scientific American blog–crappy article repeating Abbey, blah, blah, blah, but with great comments from knowledgable wild horse advocates.

Yeah, I’ve already seen this one. The very first paragraphs are so nonfactual that I stopped there and made my comment.
I subscribe to Scientific American, and the lack of research on this article is a disgrace!

let them know their wild protectors are being gathered, maimed, imprisoned and killed.
I’m sure the Calico Mountains will never be the same for the” burning man”.

IN A COURT CASE, I SEE SO MUCH THAT COULD BE USED: ANIMAL CRUELTY, HORSE RUSTLING(THOSE ARE OUR HORSES), FAILURE TO OBSERVE THE LAW OF THE LAND–THE WILD HORSE AND BURRO ACT. IT DOES SEEM THAT THERE ARE CLAUSES IN THAT ACT THAT COULD BE USED TO PROVE THAT WHAT THEY ARE DOING IS ILLEGAL. I WONDER HOW A JURY WOULD DECIDE?

The Desert Independent states that all three parties have agreed to end removals and then adds that BLM has not done so. April 30th they will be back in court. Read this little piece. It is good information.
So what happened to the three way agreement to end removals until a decision is made in court??? Is no one able to rein in BLM as they murder more horses?? Mar

Maybe they are needed for biological experiments
January 29, 2010 at 4:07 pm |
I mean maybe the horses are going to be used for biological experiments.
February 27, 2010 at 2:36 am
And the BLM staff need to be used for biological experiments and research.
You know…how the brains of mass murderers and serial killers are examined~
