Pryor Scoping Letter Issued

BLM Seeks Another Removal in Cloud’s Herd

August 16, 2011

Dear Friends of Cloud, his family, and herd; The BLM Billings Field Office mailed a Scoping Letter to interested parties on July 28th, stating their intent to reach an “Appropriate” Management Level (AML) of 90-120 adult wild horses, one year of age and older in the Pryor Mountains. If they carry out this plan 45 to as many as 75 horses would be removed in 2012. We cannot allow this to happen. Our position is clear—there is absolutely no need for any removals.

It is important that you respond to an action which would threaten the continued existence of the Pryor Wild Horse Herd. Please write a factual letter to the BLM using some of the information provided here. Remember that BLM will not consider your response unless it is clearly your message — no copying of the list supplied here. Please use your own words to communicate your polite outrage at such an unwarranted proposal.

You will note in our list of recommended response topics, the support of PZP, the one-year infertility drug. This comes as a departure for TCF. However, the remotely delivered drug given at the correct time of year has reduced the foal population and it has given us a good argument to fight for no removals. We still strongly believe in the long-range goal of natural management without helicopters or bait traps or drugs. We see PZP as a means to an end, and that end is a hands off strategy in which Mother Nature calls the shots as much as possible.

Please read on and create a powerful message on behalf of Cloud, his family and herd. BLM will not allow emails, so send your letters directly to the BLM (see address below). If you can only send an email, send it to us at and we will copy it and mail these emails to the BLM. The reason for BLM opting out of email is that we crashed their server last time. Well, let’s send enough mail to bury them in recycled paper this time around!

Letters need to be postmarked to the BLM by August 30th.

Thanks so much for standing up now to avert a disaster for the herd in 2012.

Happy Trails!

P.S. – If you mail your letters directly to BLM, please consider emailing us a copy for our records. Your comments are important to us and, on more than one occasion, we have used an idea from a supporter comment that never occurred to us. We strongly recommend you ask for a return receipt to your letters.

You can mail your letters to:

It is really very sad to think of the thousands of mustangs already held in captivity without much of a future, and this at great expense to taxpayers. Why does the BLM relentlessly cull the herds of mustangs if not to provide better grazing, higher profits for ranchers with grazing rights and 10x’s as many cattle? For this reason I boycott BEEF. I do not want to eat the meat from cattle made profitable to sell by damage to the mustang. Why should I as a taxpayer subsidize a rancher’s income derived by use of Federal lands for his business? Reconsider your decision to round-up these horses. Let them be. Sincerely, Robin McCrae

  2. Mary E. Fecher Says:

I will be sending a letter today to Jim Sparks, it makes me ill reading how they want to seperate Cloud and his family, why can’t they leave these horses alone. There methods are so inhumane. Everyone please write and show them how much we disagree with them.

  3. cowgirltrucker Says:

I want to know if they are rounding up the Elk, Antelope, or other grazing animals? Why are they trying to control the wild horse population and not the other grazing animals?

  4. eileen murphy Says:

    I plan to compose a letter to the BLM and send it certified mail.I called President Obama White House line today and asked that he become involved in stopping the roundups;

  5. Suzanne Moore Says:

Will write and just made a donation. I will do whatever it takes within my capabilities. The 2009 was my introduction to these “roundups” and I still get sad and angry when I think about it.

I’m just SO happy I was able to donate to the Freedom Fund then. Every time I see Conquistador I get goosebumps. 🙂

  6. Linda Redman Says:

I am writing letters today. Everyone please cc Montana congress & representative – and cc everyone in Congress who has signed the letters protesting the BLM

CC everyone so that the BLM know that it isn’t only them we are writing to

  7. Linda Redman Says:

    Yes sending certified will reinforce

  8. Kim Hancken Says:

Mailed my letter today (certified). Just spoke from the heart without quoting to many of the opposing facts I’m sure they have all heard as well as all of their “CRAP” we have to listen to all the time. I believe there are people in the BLM with heart and do care about the horses. These are the people we need to impress upon the most. The Arrowheads and the horses are a very spiritual experience and should be dealt with, not just with facts and figures but also from a place that is all heart and spirit !

  9. Robin Bailey Says:

Got mine in the mail this morning. I hope we flood their office with mail and faxes just like we did their server!
