Press Release: Leigh Files to Stop Rock Creek Roundup

Herd Watch Director Continues Fight for First Amendment Rights

Reno NV (July 23, 2010)—Laura Leigh, Herd-Watch Director for the Cloud Foundation and journalist, filed a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) in Nevada Federal District Court today to halt the Rock Creek Roundup and prevent a repeat fatal summer roundup as well as prevent shutting out the public and plaintiff from observing wild horse roundups.

“We’re talking about a matter of public interest,” explained Leigh’s attorney Gordon Cowan. “This is a hot button issue here in Nevada. To prevent the public and press from observing the government in action on public lands is shameful.”  continued online here (shortlink is )

everyone also needs to go read BLM’s press release re: public observation days at this roundup to understand what information the BLM’s lawyers bring to the judge.

  2. Ronnie Says:

Is there a snail address where I can mail a check to Laura Leigh’s “Wild Horse Legal Fund?”

Pray a judge finally hears the truth…and finally knows the “spin,” the lies, from the BLM.
And OUR rights as taxpaying citizens to have access to viewing the wild horses in all stages of the roundup and captivity.
To monitor! Even if behind a barbed wire fence with the sheriff…and I presume guns…breathing down observers backs!

Pray a judge acknowledges this is severe animal cruelty, abuse, neglect! A felony for citizens but NOT for the above-the-law BLM…Salazar!

It has always been incomprehensible. Intolerable. But it has just about reached the max of “no more hands tied,” impotence, for me.

Donate for more POWER! The only way I can take action, in addition to the calls to DC…the Media!

Lawsuit after lawsuit….keep them coming. One will hold! It is building!

Ronnie, I’ve been looking for that, too. I prefer “old fashioned” mail. Perhaps they can set up a P.O. Box or an account with a local, small bank or something like that.

I agree with you on the felony counts–they should include the contractors. All have been involved and all have profited.

  5. Shirley verhoef Says:

It is so puzzling. Judge hicks gave the Defendants (BLM) til Monday 5:00 PM to file their rebuttal. And until Tuesday to do something else. By then the Mustangs will be slaughtered.

  6. Janet Ferguson Says:

Isn’t there a job title of “Wild Horse Specialist” or something that “oversees” the roundups? Those are the guys and gals who should be screaming their heads off over this. . .

Put their names on the lawsuit, too, along with the contractors.

Janet, I have wondered about the “Wild Horse Specialists” too. I’m sort of thinking that they either are there for the P.R. or the ones that are sincere don’t really have much say.

    • Janet Ferguson Says:

Maybe it is time for some individual taxpayers to individually open meaningful dialog with some of these employees on a non-threatening basis and find out what (if anything) is going on in their brains ( ).

The advocates/organizations all need to have at least one meeting a year or perhaps one regional meeting a year with a set agenda.

It would be a meeting of the advocates, by the advocates (and nfp) and for the advocates only.

We would meet and greet, and have programs, seminars, and planning sessions.

    • Janet Ferguson Says:

The point being, advocates get together only in presence of BLM or Congress/Washington for the most part, in a scheduled formal setting.

Why can’t the advocates meet quarterly in different parts of the country, have live a/v feed and meet each other as the

      PRINCIPAL presence at the meetings.

  9. Janet Ferguson Says:

Just don’t feel “right” unless I leave a link, so, thanks to my Horticulture magazine e-newsletter, here’s a link about water shortages by 2050, from the NRDC: (map included)

  10. Janet Ferguson Says:

A way to get the news out to general public. Google news headlines, go to headline story or big story of week, and post about whb on comments to that story, even it is about a spy ring or a oil spill. People will read it who may never otherwise see anything about wild horses and burros!

Yesterday , I read the NYT report on the Twin Pecks Roundup. Jess Mc Kinley reporter, mentioned expert Dave Cattoor 9 times along with the mustangs Dave Cattoor, was the star of this story. The advocates and there comments where also ran. Nothing was mentioned about “welfare cattle” or the real reason the mustangs must go. In my OPINION the PR FIRM hired by the BLM has had there way, with the NYT.
