  1. Lisa LeBlanc Says:

If we’re gonna push on this one – and push HARD – we have to keep an eye on the preceedings and watch what happens after.
Does anyone remember the case about 10 years ago where 3 Marines on leave in Northern Nevada shot a number of Wild Equines?
It tapered off eventually to no jail, minimal fines and no mention of it in their military jackets.
If the Federal government can’t or won’t hold it’s own military to a high behavioral standard, how punitive do you suppose the charges against these two will be?
Betchyer backside that if an Advocate went a little off the rez, we’d be lookin’ at Special Circumstances.

    • Karen L. Says:

Yes, Lisa, we need to push hard! I bet the sheer number of letters to the prosecutor will be impressive this time though. So many more people are paying attention to these abuses now—that alone should garner his attention!

  2. Jan Eaker Says:

Karen, I agree, the difference is today, we are NOT going to get tired of the whole thing and lose interest in this case, we will demand that these 2 get justice done to them, in the name of the horses they killed. And at the same time send a message that these kinds of actions are no longer going to be made light of ,

THESE ARE ONES THAT REALLY NEED TO BE GONE AFTER–BIG TIME
THIS IS ON THE MUSTANG PROJECTS BLOG
The State of Nevada also has laws protecting wild horses but the Gibbons Administration hasn’t been real keen on following the law. Gibbons showed former Agriculture Director Don Henderson the door and installed his buddy and anti government crusader Tony Lesperance as Director of Agriculture. It’s not legal to slip state property out the door to kill buyers and EWA is trying to get charges filed against Lesperance for the 8 horses that did end up going to Olsen … not only through an illegal sale but with state employees with a state truck and trailer hauling the horses across the state to Lesperance’s buddy Olsen.

Rather than plug up this blog with all the sordid details, there is a Wild Horse War Room story on this incident that can be read here:

  4. Marilyn Wargo Says:

Can or will the charges be changed at this point? At least we can let them know that this ‘one count’ is short four… mar

    • Karen L. Says:

Mar, I don’t know if charges can be changed since this concerns a federal prosecutor, but I have seen individual jurisdictions up the charges according to state laws when faced with protests/petitions from citizens writing in through a “legislative network”. I was involved in a campaign to change a misdemeanor to a felony over the murder of a puppy recently, and we were totally successful. The DA was swayed by the volume and content of the mail he received.

  5. Michael J Ahles Says:

Rather than wishing harm on others no matter how wrong they might be, it would be better to do something right.
Freedom is right, freeing the mustangs is right, and freely choosing wisely what we eat, not eating beef is right. Doing what is only right will set us free, the horses, our land, as equally as you and me.
    Freedom is Right,

  6. LOUIE COCROFT Says:

MICHAEL, IT ISN’T A MATTER OF HARMING ANYONE. IT IS A MATTER OF TAKING A STRONG STAND AND DRAWING A LINE THAT ISN’T CROSSED. THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REVENGE AND JUSTICE.

  7. LOUIE COCROFT Says:

WE ALL NEED TO GO IN AND COMMENT HERE. GEORGE KNAPP WENT TO BAT AGAIN FOR THE HORSES–LET’S COMMENT ON HIS ARTICLE AND BACK HIM UP.

The most current story is I-Team: Nearly 80 Wild Horses Dead After Roundup.

  8. Marilyn Wargo Says:

whatever has possessed these people to commit this crime each animal who died was the result of individual action, an individual decision. The wanton disregard for life alone should be a separate charge. mar

  9. jan Says:

i do not blieve the blm would ever free these horses – that is not their intent – and i would like to add blm to horse killers too but guess i cant do that

  10. LOUIE COCROFT Says:

WE NEED TO GET STARTED ON THIS:

BLM Requests Public Input on Plans to Gather Excess Wild Horses

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Rock Springs Field Office is requesting public input on a proposal to gather excess wild horses from the White Mountain and Little Colorado Herd Management Areas (HMA). Gathering would start on or about Oct. 1, 2010 or after the next foaling season, July 1, 2011.
Recent population surveys revealed that approximately 301 wild horses were residing within the White Mountain HMA and 142 wild horses in the Little Colorado HMA. Census data for these HMAs was collected in May 2009, and wild horse populations are exceeding the appropriate management level (AML) established for each HMA. The AML range for the White Mountain HMA is 205-300 and the AML range for the Little Colorado HMA is 69-100 wild horses.
Comments must be received by May 7, 2010. Comments may be mailed or hand delivered to the Rock Springs Field Office at 280 Hwy 191 North, Rock Springs, WY 82901. Emailed comments must be addressed to: WhiteMountain_LittleColorado_HMA_WY@blm.gov. Electronic comments will only be accepted from the above address. Please include “White Mountain and Little Colorado HMAs Scoping Comments” in the subject line.
The scoping notice, map and all other future documents corresponding with this action will be posted at: http://www.blm.gov/wy/st/en/info/NEPA/rsfodocs/whitemtn_littlecolo.html.

THINK WE CAN GET ANOTHER PETITION GOING?

  12. LOUIE COCROFT Says:

JAN, I THINK THAT IS WHAT THE LAWSUIT IS ABOUT, AS I UNDERSTAND IT. THERE IS A LOT OF INFORMATION CONCERNING IT ON AMERICAN HERDS.

  13. themustangproject Says:

    Whew! Ok… Got it updated…
I talked with Natalie Collins from the USAtty’s Office this afternoon to clear up a few things…

  14. Kristen Walker Says:

There is another really important action at The In Defence of Animals site or ACTION ALERT, most of you probably got it via email. There is two up coming proposed round ups the California wild horse herd management area and the Wyoming round up, THE PUBLIC COMMENTS ARE DUE BY MAY 3RD! If you go to the IDOA site you should be able to find it and they will fax them to the powers that be. I JUST CAN NOT WATCH ANOTHER BARBARIC ROUND UP! EVERYBODY PLEASE COMMENT, I KNOW YOU WILL. Kristen

  15. Karen L. Says:

Everyone, This is a little off topic, but it does have to do with litigation. The IDA/Downer suit should be going back to court for the Calico horses in one week. Keep all the plaintiffs and their attorneys in your thoughts and prayers, and of course donate when possible!

  16. LOUIE COCROFT Says:

KRISTEN, THANK YOU FOR THE ALERT!

  17. LOUIE COCROFT Says:

POSTED THE IDA PETITION ALERT ON WILLIE NELSON’S WEBSITE. POST IT ANYWHERE THAT YOU CAN THINK OF WHERE PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT IT. LET’S CRANK IT UP.

  18. Michael J Ahles Says:

The BLM will release the horses if you boycott beef.
Economic sanctions work, BLM is beef.
    And its free.
Funny how free is the solution to freedom,
    try it, you’ll see.
    Thanks,

  19. Jan Says:

it may be the beef industry that wants to take out the horses but in the last year or so in washington, the attitude of the govt, elected by us, has been we are in control and we will do as we please without regard to any of the american people desires and what’s right

i fear another roundup – foals wont be very old and able to keep up – for me, their pain is the worse
