Dear Supporters,
I just returned from the Arrowheads and after much long distance glassing with binoculars and spotting scope I was able to spot Cloud and his family with his little daughter, Jasmine; Flint and his family including young Jasper, as well as Bolder and his family with his pale buckskin filly, Jewel. All looked great from about a mile away across deep Big Coulee Canyon. I’ll be sending out more details and photos from this winter trip soon.
For now, I’d like to be the first to tell you that this Thursday, March 25th, the March for Mustangs will take place not only by the White House in Washington DC but on the Las Vegas Strip, by the Los Angeles Federal Building and in front of the US Embassy in London! In D.C. we’re honored to have award-winning actress and advocate, Wendie Malick speak to the crowd at the rally. Wendie will be joined by long time advocate and advisor on the original 1971 Wild Horse and Burro Act, Hope Ryden; author RT Fitch, Filmmaker James Kleinert and many, many more! We are especially pleased to announce that country music artist Clay Canfield will be at the rally to sing his incredible song “Wild Horses” and more before we march to the BLM office with signs and banners.
TAKE A MOMENT FOR MUSTANGS Please spread the word on all the March for Mustang Rallies and support all the protests with calls to your Senators and Congress people on this important issue. Wild herds, like Clouds, are being managed to extinction with our taxpayer dollars by the very agency charged with their protection. Let’s make a big push for the mustangs during these rallies. On Thursday please call your on behalf of Cloud and all the wild horses!
President Obama: 202-456-1111 and
Congress: 202-224-3121.

When you reach your Representative and Senators, please ask to speak to the aide on the wild horse and burro issue. 1) Wild horses are being mismanaged in cruel waste of taxpayer dollars that is destroying the last of our wild herds in the West. 2) Vote NO on supplying funding for wild horse “preserves” in the East and Midwest– already there are now far more (36,000) wild horses in holding than in the wild where there may only be some 15,000 remaining. 3) Keep up the call for a moratorium on roundups and let everyone know that you love wild horses and burros in the wild and you vote! Or find and email your Senators and Congress person here on

Was hoping to hear about Cloud — I am so glad you have seen him, Flint, and Bolder and their families!
March 23, 2010 at 11:41 pm |
Best of luck and hope you can bring home a moratorium. We are still fighting. Glad you could see the horses and look forward to photos. Love and hugs to all in DC. Make them listen and put BLM/DOI in their place; away from wild horses and burros. mar

By the way, while you are in Washington, I have an urgent request. Go get the transcripts of the discussions leading up the the passage of the 1971 Act.
Get all the transcripts and put them on your website. Our lawyers need to read all the transcripts and be able to quote them to show the “legislative intent” of the original lawmakers.
March 23, 2010 at 11:46 pm |
P.S. If any cattle get caught up in those BLM roundups — I remind you — cattle thievery is still a very heavy felony.
No wonder they don’t want the public to watch.
March 24, 2010 at 1:12 am |
sure the transcripts from the 1871 law debate are online – will look
got email today from madeline pickens group – new book on wild horse annie
WILD HORSE ANNIE – THE LAST OF THE MUSTANGS BY DAVID CRUISE AND ALISON GRIFFITHS
BOOK IS ON SALE NOW FOR $26 – MAYBE CLOUD WILL CARRY IT – SOME OF THE PROCEEDS GO TO FIGHTING FOR THE HORSES – WEBSITE I GOT ALSO HAS A VIDEO ON WILD HORSE ANNIE AND THERE IS A MOVIE PLANNED FROM THE BOOK – GREAT THING TO GET AND READ TO YOUR KIDS
March 24, 2010 at 1:29 am |
My sister studied law and she suggested the concept showing legislative intent through the original discussions that took place on the Senate and House floors that led up to the passage of the 1971 Act.
March 24, 2010 at 8:25 am |
JANET, THAT IS WHAT I KEEP THINKING–GO BACK TO THE BEGINNING. IS THERE SOMETHING THERE THAT COULD BE USED AS A PRECEDENT OR SOMETHING. SENATOR LANDRIEU DOES HAVE THAT LAW INTERN/STUDENT FROM GEORGETOWN TO HELP WITH THIS.
March 25, 2010 at 1:48 am |
My question has always been who were the original sponsors of the 1971 Act, are they still living today, and I wonder what they think about the way things have turned out now?
I shudder to think of Mrs. Velma and what she would think sometimes.

regarding janel velez mitchell – here in california she is on hln which is affiliate of cnn and our time is 4 to 5 so would assume that would be the 7 pm in washington – going to catch her show today to double ck – anyone else know when she is on – this is west coast time
is anyone alive that worked on that 1971 bill – maybe you could write or call them – the oldest senator i think i heard of was the late ted kennedy but maybe some others are still here
March 24, 2010 at 5:46 pm |
The tapes or transcripts should be there – you are doing great — I will be back with more info from my sister Lynn who is feeding me stuff via texts by phone. . .
I know Hope Ryden was involved — not as elected official in official proceedings but maybe she can help. I will contact her. . .we have exchanged emails in the fairly recent past. . . . .before Cloud blog started. . . .

LOL guess I should’ve kept scrolling and reading down the page before I commented! Didn’t realize we were saying the same thing.

Maybe the Georgetown intern is the one — apparently they would need to have a background in “constitutional law.”

Wish I could be in all four places at once. I will be there in spirit. A prayer and a blessing for all the protestors and all the wild ones.

AND ANOTHER–THIS ONE IS ON THE MUSTANG PROJECTS WEBSITE–GET YOUR PENS READY:
BLM to Gather Wild Horses Along Highway 93
Release Date: 02/12/10 Contacts: Chris Hanefeld, 775-289-1842, chris_hanefeld@nv.blm.gov News Release No. 2010-25
Ely, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District, Schell Field Office has issued the Decision Record for the Final Environmental Assessment (EA) for the U.S. Highway 93 Corridor Wild Horse Gather.
The BLM will remove approximately 50 wild horses that have moved out of the Eagle and Silver King herd management areas and are hanging out along U.S. Highway 93 north of Pioche. The BLM is aware of at least three wild horses that have been hit by vehicles, and the animals need to be removed from the area for their protection and the safety of motorists.
The gather is expected to start on or about March 15 and continue until the wild horses residing outside the HMAs are removed. The BLM will use corrals baited with feed and water to gather the horses. When caught, the animals will be transported to the National Wild Horse and Burro Center at Palomino Valley, north of Reno, Nev., or the Delta Wild Horse and Burro Facility, in Delta, Utah.
The animals will be offered for adoption to qualified individuals. Un-adopted horses will be placed in long-term pastures where they will be humanely cared for and treated, and retain their “wild” status and protection under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act. The BLM does not sell or send any horses to slaughter.
March 26, 2010 at 5:11 pm |
Better to be hit by vehicles than hit by the BLM

KEEP CALLING THE WHITE HOUSE COMMENT LINE–ELYSE SAID THAT WE ARE BEING HEARD AND HAVE MADE THE CALL LIST. THINK IT IS BEST TO KEEP IT TO 4 OR 5 POINTS–THEY TAKE NOTES ON WHAT YOU SAY AND YOU HAVE TO KEEP IT BRIEF. THE ONES THAT I HAVE TALKED TO SEEM TO ALREADY KNOW THE ISSUE BEFORE I START.
March 25, 2010 at 7:05 pm |
OK, WE HAVE TWO TO COMMENT ON–IS THAT RIGHT? I GOT NOTICE OF THE WYOMING PETITION THROUGH EMAIL–WE NEED THE PETITION LINK POSTED HERE–IT IS THROUGH IDA.
March 25, 2010 at 7:51 pm |
The Adobe Town and Salt Wells Creek Removal is the current Wyoming roundup needing comments by April 2, I believe. I’m going to try to link the petition, but am not sure I can make it work.

JANET, THIS IS ON THE AMERICAN HERDS–IN THE COMMENTS. I DON’T THINK SHE WILL MIND–THIS IS SO IMPORTANT AND IT’S GOOD INFORMATION:
Another provision of FLPMA the BLM is ignoring is the EXCEPTION clause that clearly states any lands specially designated for a certain purpose prior to the enactment of FLPMA shall be exempt from any mandatory “multi-use” or “sustainability of yield” considerations or requirements. In other words, any other use of the land MAY be permitted (discretionary) as long as the new use didnt interfere with the “principality” of the land as wild horse and burro historic range.” The law is pretty clear on this so I left wondering why have they been getting away with ignoring (nullifying)these very important federal statutues for so many years? The WFHBA of 1971 and FLMPAs exception for “previously designated” lands were enacted to protect our wild equines, and to keep them forever free and principal users of their historic lands NO MATTER WHAT OTHER USE may be planned for the land at a later time. BLM is ignoring the laws alright, but it is the LAwyers who are letting them get away with it. How long before a wfhb laywer will write out a “statutory nulification” charge against the DOI and/or the BLM? Then you will have your winner. Then all the round-ups will stop. What R they waiting 4?

THEY HAVE GREAT INFO. . .
SOME OF THE RANGELANDS YADDA YADDA
1978 PUBLIC RANGELANDS IMPROVEMENT ACT
(THIS IS FROM SAME PLACE — A SUMMARY– I USED EXTENSIVELY IN MY COMMENT)
I think it cancels some of the stuff in the 1971 but haven’t researched — not time now — back later — am finishing my comment on the Propane HMAs I mean the Tonopah, Austin and the Santa FE, I mean the . . . . back later. . .
PS TALKED TO STEVE WILLIAM HAVE MORE INFO — FOR LATER BUT THEY TAKE COMMENTS ALL DURING THIS TIME PLUS THE THING ABOUT TODAY IS IF YOU GET IT IN TODAY IT GOES INTO THE APPEAL GROUP (You can appeal). If not in by today, you can still send comments.
Also his boss and the man in charge with this is Steve Williams’ supervisor named Dave Palmer. Steve is going to shoot Dave Palmer a copy of my letter. I warned Steve my letter “has a tone.”
lol
March 27, 2010 at 2:37 am |
This is quite disturbing information. . . .
But so is everything related to this exercise of making life better for the wild equids.
March 26, 2010 at 8:28 am |
I TRIED TO PUT ENOUGH INFO SO YOU CAN SWING OVER TO AMERICAN HERDS AND READ THE FULL COMMENT.
March 26, 2010 at 5:32 pm |
just cked – 10:30 am in calif and the velez video from yesterday is still online at cnn so if you missed it google it and watch it – i did tape it and i have another one i taped off pbs about wild horses in california
March 26, 2010 at 5:35 pm |
i noticed on the velez show they mainly mentioned the rancher issue – what about the blm wanting to use the public lands for engery development – i think that is more of an issue than the rancher issue – maybe someone could contact jane and let her know about all the goings on with the different engery developments going on on the public lands – give her some hard facts she can put out on her show as a follow up
March 26, 2010 at 5:43 pm |
what is date of article on american herds when i googled it several came up
tks
March 26, 2010 at 5:46 pm |
on one gather i read about blm is going to do – apparently horses are along some highway – so guess a highway runs thru the horses punlic lands where they are living – seems to me unless hiway is a thoroughfare – close off the road and save the horses
March 26, 2010 at 6:02 pm |
JAN, GO OVER TO THE MUSTANG PROJECTS BLOG–THAT IS WHERE THE HORSES GETTING ON THE HIGHWAY “GATHER” IS POSTED. I HAVE SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT.
WHY NOT BAIT TRAP THEM BACK TO THEIR AREAS– WHERE THEY ARE AWAY FROM THE ROAD–WOULDN’T THAT BE LESS EXPENSIVE?
THAT SOUNDS LIKE AN AREA THAT SHOULD BE MARKED AS OPEN RANGE.
March 26, 2010 at 6:05 pm |
JAN, THE ARTICLE ON AMERICAN HERDS IS FROM ONE OF THE COMMENTS–LOOK AT THE COMMENTS. I THINK THE DATE IS THERE–MARCH 7. THIS READER KNOWS HER LAW.

Special thanks to all who went to DC. Thanks to those who give suppot via the net.
We give the Mustangs a voice and bring light to the issue to hand. I posted on Facebook and informed friends.
Keep up the great work!
Let’s make sure the Mustangs are being treated by the BLM with kindness and given respect as the precious creatures they are.
March 26, 2010 at 8:09 pm |
THIS IS WHERE WE COMMENT ON THE SLATED ROUND-UP OF THE HORSES THAT ARE GETTING ONTO HIGHWAY 93. THEY SAY THEY WILL START “GATHERING” BY MARCH 15–THAT MEANS THEY HAVE ALREADY STARTED–WE SHOULD COMMENT ANYWAY, AS THOSE HORSES ARE TO BE SENT TO PALOMINO VALLEY HOLDING FACILITY:
Ely, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Ely District, Schell Field Office has issued the Decision Record for the Final Environmental Assessment (EA) for the U.S. Highway 93 Corridor Wild Horse Gather.
March 26, 2010 at 8:25 pm |
Thanks, Louie, it never hurts to tell them what you think at any time. Thanks for the info above, also. mar
March 27, 2010 at 7:40 am |
MAR, IT’S KIND OF LIKE FINDING AN ARTICLE HIDDEN UNDER A LOT OF PAPER–I JUST TRY TO PULL IT TO THE TOP. SOMETIMES IT GETS FORGOTTEN OR OVERLOOKED. THERE IS A LOT GOING ON.
March 27, 2010 at 2:32 pm |
because the jane velez mitchell was on cnn – i sent to my friend in israel – she does animal rescue there – she cant believe that we are not protecting our wild life = she says in israel that is a number one priority with the government –
also saw article about wild horses in australia – how they are protecting them tho ranchers arent thrilled but i think australia wild horses are descended from horses brought over by settlers –
March 27, 2010 at 2:41 pm |
i taped all the harry potter movies and now putting on dvds but in the 2nd movie you hear the history of hogwarts – and one of the founders was named salazar slithering – the house called slithering was named after him – so i thot what a great name for salazar and the book was written before he was head of doi – a snake – speaks with forked tongue
March 27, 2010 at 8:51 pm |
i read about highway horses but blm wants to remove them completely – guess they are in habit to wander along the road
March 28, 2010 at 2:28 am |
JAN, I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THAT ONE–HIGHWAY 93, ALSO. IT IS NEAR A PLACE CALLED PIOCHE. WHEN I LOOKED IT UP, THEY CALL IT A GHOST TOWN. THERE ARE APPROX. 900 PEOPLE LIVING THERE. IT DOES SEEM STRANGE THAT PART OF THE COUNTRY WOULD BE OF SUCH CONCERN. I KNOW THAT HORSES ON THE ROAD ARE A DANGER, BUT–SUDDENLY THIS IS CAUSE FOR REMOVAL? WHY NOT PUT BAIT TRAPS TO LURE THEM BACK WHERE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE? I AM WONDERING WHETHER THE ROAD IS MARKED WITH WARNING SIGNS, SUCH AS YOU WOULD HAVE ON MOUNTAIN ROADS?
March 28, 2010 at 3:26 am |
Louie – one of the reasons for the roundups thru the 93 corridor is supposedly because the Wild Ones have left the Rez and are a highway hazard. However, after searching Nevada Highway and Dept. of Transportation archives, all I could find was ‘deer versus vehicle’ accidents – none involving Equines.
That don’t mean there isn’t any – just that I couldn’t find any.
Also, and just for the sake of causing arguments – the Tonopah area Round-ups are being based on drought information from 2009 – before precicpitation for the Winter 2009-10 had even been calculated. Last week, Tonopah-Austin got two additional inches of snow. Spring may be here, but Winter in Nevada isn’t over til it’s over.

LISA, THANK YOU. I DIDN’T KNOW WHERE TO LOOK. IT ALL HELPS WHEN WRITING A LETTER, THOUGH IT IS KIND OF HARD TO GET STARTED. FEELS SORT OF LIKE WRITING TO AN INANIMATE OBJECT–“ODE TO A GRECIAN URN” OR SOMETHING. WAY MORE FUN TO WRITE HERE. THIS IS WHERE ALL THE ACTION IS.
March 28, 2010 at 5:23 am |
I DO WRITE WHEN IT COMES TIME TO COMMENT, BUT NOTHING LIKE THE LETTERS I SEE HERE.
