Oh boy what can I say, I see our ever present Bridger Hake aka Pendelton Taster is in the middle of the fray once more. What did I expect.

I dont know what else to say, it seems like fighting a losing battle but we cant be discouraged, even if that is easier said than done.

Red Alert! Red Alert! There is a Brenda L. who claims that a mustang count from Google Earth reveals 100,000 mustangs in the WEst!! (I hope that’s not what I read, but I think that’s what she said!)

Also rest assured that as I write this, the comments are now overwhelmingly on the side of clarifying the shortfalls of the article.

Fascinating Article! Abso-LU-tely Riveting!! Worthy of world-class Composting.
Really? And the Smithsonian actually published? With a straight face.

  4. Linda Says:

Hi, Janet & everybody. RE: Brenda L.’s claim. Yep, you read it right.

100,000 Wild Horses? This doesn’t even approach the level of “junk science”!

Unfortunately, the “Google Earth Theory” is now being touted as a “scientific” rather than a “casual” count by many BLM supporters and pro-slaughter groups. What I’d like to know is who claimed to have done this count in the first place? Maybe I’ll try it. I’ll just count the legs and divide by 4!

This is the best (and funniest) article I’ve found on the inherent problems associated with using the “Google Earth Theory” on wild horse numbers as gospel. It also has interesting comments on the BLM’s “mathematical” approach to determining wild horses numbers.

P.S. – Just looked up my parents’ house in Massachusetts (a supposed “frequently updated area”) using Google Earth. There’s a car in their driveway they traded in over 5 years ago!

The first time I ever heard this Google Earth counting method was last year in an article from – ta da – The United Organizations of the Horse. They said and “informal count” yielded 100,000 horses. I almost dropped the magazine! How can anyone actually BELIEVE you can do something like that with Google Earth!?

      Lord help us!

  5. jan Says:

sounds like she works with blm – where are those horses hiding – in the trees – boy what a joke – goes to show you that even a well known institution makes mistakes and doesnt even realize it – who proof reads their data before its published – dont think nat geo mag would make that mistake

  6. Kathryn Baker Says:

The Smithsonian article was shallow and incomplete at best. The quote that the helicopters were like annoying mosquitoes is ridiculous.
Both the author and the photographer should be ashamed that they did not do a better job on this article. They never even mentioned the deaths of the foals and the aborted pregnancies or the other deaths.
I was furious and I have already sent a letter to the editors of the Smithsonian magazine.

CRAIG AND ELYSE STILL NEED A 4X4 VEHICLE TO COVER THE ROUGH TERRAIN IN THEIR HUMANE OBSERVER WORK. CAN WE ALL TRY TO GIVE WHAT WE CAN THIS WEEK?

I looked back and found that Shelley Sawhook was going to see about the new Ford vehicle.

The address for Craig Downer was P.O. Box 456, Minden, NV 89423

He said that if we donated to the Tapir Fund it was tax deductible, but otherwise just make a check to him.

  8. LOUIE COCROFT Says:

WE ARE LOOKING BACK THROUGH THE BLOG TO FIND THE ADDRESS FOR THE ANDEAN TAPIR FUND. THAT WOULD BE FOR ANYONE WHO CAN USE THE DONATION FOR THEIR TAXES.
    THEY NEED ABOUT $2000.

  9. LOUIE COCROFT Says:

JUST A THOUGHT–ANYONE IN THE NEVADA AREA THAT WOULD HAPPEN TO HAVE A VEHICLE TO DONATE COULD GET A PRETTY GOOD TAX DEDUCTION.

I TRIED TO PUT A COMMENT IN THE SMITHSONIAN BUT IT DIDN’T POST. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
