GREAT! Good news, more protest rallies!! Never let up until we get final acceptable results.

Hope you have a great turn out and decent weather. Say Neiiiiigh to BLM!

  2. LOUIE COCROFT Says:

RECEIVED AN EMAIL PETITION FROM IDA–TO STOP EAGLE ROUND-UP–MUST BE SIGNED BY FEB 12. QUESTION ABOUT ONE CLAUSE IN THE FORMATTED COMMENT. WANT TO CHECK IT OUT WITH CLOUD FOUNDATION BEFORE SIGNING. THIS IS CLAUSE:
    * Implement and expand the current proposal of fertility control treatments – currently BLM is considering treating approximately 236 mares with fertility control vaccine, this number should be expanded to allow more horse to remain on the range;
IS THIS SOMETHING WE SHOULD AGREE TO?

    • Margaret Says:

      HELL NO!

Sorry Louie for shouting. First we want to find out EXACTLY how many horses will be turned back out. Are they going to release 50 studs to 5 mares or what exactly will the ratio be?

If they are releasing 250 mares that’s too many mares being PZP’d. I want the BLM to not PZP any female under at least 5 years of age. They did this to two of Cloud’s mares and they have not gotten into foal. They were PZP’d at 1 and 2 yrs of age.

Numbers need to account for deaths (fire storms weather age) as well as deaths from predators. If you only allow for 21 foals per year and every year all 21 die for various reasons there is no herd growth.

      • Nora Morbeck Says:

I’m with you, Margeret. I want a hard count on these herds. All of this “horses double in population every 5 years” is just stupid. Yes, they reproduce. They also die! So, the herds can’t possibly grow that rapidly. Shoot. One lightning strike can take out a small band of horses. Does the BLM even think about weather when they’re going on and on about “no natural predators?”
Let’s figure out how many are really out there before we start shooting mares up with PZP.

    • Nora Morbeck Says:

Louie — Good question. Having done some research on PZP contraception, I’m not sold on it for a few reasons. This has been discussed on this blog before, but I’ll share again.
1st: The shot can last up to 2 years, but may stop working at some point prior to two years. This means breeding, that normally occurs in the spring, may occur at any time. This brings up my 2nd issue: Mares bred out of season have out of season births, meaning that foals don’t have a chance to mature before winter. The Pryor mares were shot with PZP last fall. So, if the shot lasts until fall of 2011, these mares will foal late summer/early fall of 2012 — meaning their foals probably won’t last the winter. Nothing like population control, eh? And 3rd: Do we really know the long term effects this contraceptive has on immature females (or even grown mares?) Does it have the potential to sterilize them permanently? I’d like to see the research.
If IDA is promoting using PZP in the spring, I’d be sort of OK with it, but still not completely so. Unless they’re proposing darting these horses, we’re still talking about rounding them up — and aren’t we trying to get round ups stopped?
The ratio of stallions to mares is all whacked out due to human interference. The numbers of pregnancies will be human controlled to an extent by PZP. But births may also be on the upswing to compensate for losses. We just don’t know for sure what the consequences might be. But one thing I do know — Nature doesn’t respond predictably, the way humans think it should. I suspect that the more we mess with the natural balance, the sorrier we’ll be in the long run.

    • Karen L. Says:

The e-mail is regarding the Antelope Roundup, I believe. And, it is made to be “personalized”—portions can be removed.

    • Suzanne Moore Says:

Guys ~ Late last evening I got the story about there being a number of emails flying around, not all of them legit.

I wouldn’t sign ANYTHING. Mr. Sprigs is in some very sensitive negotiations with the BLM – I KNOW that much, and I don’t think IDA has sent out a petition.

Why don’t we just wait and see? I don’t think we will have to wait long.

      Suzanne

  3. LOUIE COCROFT Says:

I THINK WHAT WE DO IS ADD TO THE COMMENT THAT WE DO NOT THINK THEY SHOULD IMPLEMENT THE FERTILITY PROGRAM, BECAUSE THAT MEANS THE HORSES WOULD STILL HAVE TO BE ROUNDED UP, AND THAT IS THE TRAUMA THAT WE ARE TRYING TO PREVENT. WE HAVE NO GUARANTEE THAT THEY WOULD BE RELEASED. WE ARE ADVOCATING FOR AN “IN THE WILD” MANAGEMENT PROGRAM, AND BESIDES, 1.3 MILLION ACRES IS MORE THAN ENOUGH RANGE FOR THE FEW HORSES THAT ARE LEFT. GO AHEAD AND SIGN–JUST ADD THAT.
    DOES THAT SOUND RIGHT?

  4. Laura Evans Says:

there is no good answer to this. If we don’t agree to more treated mares then which mares are we condemning to what ever the BLM has in store for them? I don’t like it either but would they rather be treated and free or not treated and removed?

  5. Lisa LeBlanc Says:

If the BLM had an interest in an actual Herd Database, they might be better able to actually ‘manage’ the herds, determine which mares or stallions would be good candidates for birth control based on band behavior and past foalings; and stop condemning the older horses to summary execution. The herds base their behaviors in large part on the ‘stories’ the older horses have to tell. By indiscriminate gathering, just all WILLY-NILLY, how can they describe this as ‘management’?

    “TRUTH RALLY” UPDATE
    Saturday February 20, 2010
    12:00 until 3:00 pm
in front of the Legislative Building
    202 North Carson Street – U.S. Highway 395
    Carson City, Nevada (State Capitol)

As the Calico tragedy ends, scoping has begun for the Twin Peaks roundup in California. Additionally, Nevada’s Virginia Range herd is now in grave danger of also being rounded up. Though the Eagle HMA roundup in Ely, Nevada has been delayed, it has NOT been canceled entirely!

    The Battle Continues
In memory of Calico’s 40 dead horses and 30 aborted foals.
It is more important than ever our ‘Truth Rally” be a large and successful demonstration. We would really appreciate CONFIRMED participant numbers by the end of this week!

Our goal is to inform the press there will be 100 people attending this demonstration; the invitation to newscasters will be going out February 12, 2010. PLEASE send to the names below ASAP, how many in your
party that will be attending, if you are bringing your own signs, and the distances you are traveling to join us. Of course, last minute attendees are definitely welcome and please don’t forget to invite your friends, family!
    .
Sign Suggestions: ‘DEATH IS NOT AN OPTION!’
‘STOP KILLING OUR WILD HORSES!’ ‘WE DEMAND THE TRUTH!’
‘TRUTH NOT LIES!’ ‘STOP ROUNDUPS NOW!’ ‘TELL THE WHOLE TRUTH!’ ‘MUSTANGS – OUR NATIONAL HERITAGE’ “INVESTIGATE BLM NOW”
    ‘BROKEN HORSES – BROKEN PROMISES’
    .
At our ‘Truth Rally,’ we will present documentation to prove what advocates have been trying to get across all along. What BLM does not say is more revealing than what they do say. We are in the process of preparing a
list of just a few of BLM’s incorrect and/or incomplete statements, along with the absolute facts of BLM’s mismanagement of our wild horses and burros. The goal is for change and open communication to set this program on the path that works for the horses and burros. There will be an informational table at the Truth Rally with these fact sheets to present to both the press and to the public.

It’s time for a thorough investigation of BLM’s Wild Horse
    & Burro Program.

    LOUIE
I AM LIKING WHAT YOU SUGGEST IN THE SIGNING OF THE IDA PETITION NEEDED BY FRIDAY. IS EVERYONE IN AGREEMENT WITH AN AMENDED SIGNING? I HAVE NOT YET SIGNED IT, BUT WAS PLANING TO, TRUSTING IDA IN THIS.
    ANY FURTHER COMMENTS?

LOUIE YOU SEEM SO LEVEL HEADED. COULD YOU PLEASE EMAIL ME CONCERNING THIS MATTER SINCE IT IS TIME SENSITIVE, I HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU BY THURSDAY. I GUESS I AM YELLING TOO IN CAPS, BUT IT SURE IS EASY TO READ! MY EMAIL IS LISTED ON “TRUTH RALLY” FLYER ABOVE.

CONCERNING THE “TRUTH RALLY” IN CARSON CITY, ADVOCATES PLANNING TO COME, PLEASE TRY TO BE HALF AN HOUR EARLY FOR PRESS PURPOSES. HOPE TO SEE SOME OF YOU THERE! YOUR VOICES ARE NEEDED HERE ALSO.

    • Janet Ferguson Says:

What “truth rally flyer” — where????

(I can’t be there but, just trying to follow the conversation)

  8. mustangdreams... Cat Kindsfather Says:

One more thing in regards to the “Truth Rally”. If you plan to come, please try to RSVP to one of the email addresses provided, or to the phone numbers. I am trying to get a list compiled to forward to Bonnie as she is very busy. Thanks!

  9. LOUIE COCROFT Says:

CAT, I DON’T KNOW HOW TO EMAIL YOU–DON’T THINK IT IS A GOOD IDEA FOR YOU TO PUT TOO MUCH PERSONAL INFO ON THE BLOG. I DID TRY TO GO TO THE WEBSITE THAT YOU ASKED ME TO–THE ONE WITH PICTURES, BUT I GOT LOST. I AM NEW AT THIS COMPUTER THING.
THANK YOU FOR THE COMPLIMENT–NOT SURE THAT IT IS DESERVED. I THINK WE ARE ALL PRETTY FOCUSED, CONSIDERING THE SERIES OF EVENTS WE HAVE WATCHED UNFOLD.

  10. LOUIE COCROFT Says:

    NO-NEITHER OF THOSE.

    • Laura Evans Says:

It’s really easy to do and it gives you a way to get in touch with people without actually posting your information for the world to see because you set it up to only allow the people you know. Another thing you can do is create an email specifically to be posted that you can delete if you start getting too much crap.

      • Janet Ferguson Says:

Maybe TCF would assist. (Leave your email with their office and other person can get it from them.)???
