As I have been reading to catch up with comments from friends and other advocates here today, this will just intensify what we all feel; grief and loss. There are new ideas for gaining help and getting info out to the public and the press. At this time the abusive and violent methods of this roundup cannot be doubted and in this we have the proof that BLM is in extreme denial about their management and methods. No where would professionals allow this treatment of such fine horses that are now losing families, bloodlines and their future through this extreme treatment. This is never going away and neither are we. The record shows that BLM should not be managing theses wild horses at all. I think they need to be PUT IN TRUST TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND THOSE WHO PROFESSIONALS AND ADVOCATES ALIKE WILL AGREE CAN IMPLEMENT SAFE AND REWARDING MANAGEMENT OF OUR NATIONAL TREASURE WILD HORSES AND BURROS. THIS VIOLENCE MUST END AND WE ARE THE ONLY ONES WITH ANSWERS AND SCIENCE TO TAKE CARE OF OUR WILD ONES. mar

No signs of slowing down their operations to review their Mustang death toll and forced aborted foals. No signs whatsoever of a rational thought process to determine if their procedures are correct. No signs of ceasing their obvious failures to provide humane care and caution towards helpless creatures under their authority.

There are no words to express how deeply disturbed I am with President Obama, the DOI and the BLM – especially after reading Laura Allen’s eloquent & supremely intelligent writing ‘An Open Letter to President Obama’.

All these horrific deaths and injuries since the end of December. Every day the loss count grows. My trust level is -1000%. I cannot help but think this thought: though I grieve the suffering and loss of life of each Mustang from the Calico region, I am somewhat glad they are free from their suffering now and have been spared the slaughter house torture the other 2,000 to 2,500 Calico Mustangs will be facing (minus the Mustangs managed to be bought back by rescue & advocate groups). I still don’t believe there are really 30 some thousands Mustangs and Burros in long term BLM prison pens. Land and resources are too valuable for the BLM, the cattle industry, energy and mining leases. No one is going to house Mustangs indefinitely. The Salazar zoos are a prank. The billions of dollars in funding increases are going in pockets – not towards care of Mustangs languishing in pens. There is going to be a break some day. This whole situation is screaming of scandalous corruption of the highest magnitude.

This isn’t counting the 30 spontaneous abortions caused by this roundup.

Are not 5 sparrows sold for 2 pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Jesus, Luke 12:6

America is turning wicked with this slaughter of animals and the environment. More Christians must use their vote and their voice to stop the carnage and the terror.

    • Marilyn Wargo Says:

Sharon, We are not all Christians. We are many faiths and beliefs. It would be nice if some of those who are so strongly expressive of Christian values to realize that for months many have been sidelined who are simply not of the same background. We are very patient with this, I am not trying to complain or say you should not say what you have, just remember that you are leaving many out… we do not do that back. We include all. You should try to also, as a norm.

One of the things I’ve noticed is that WH&B advocates are often placed in the category of “bleeding hearts” and I constantly hear that wild herd issues are “emotionally charged.” I’ll admit that I’m very passionate about these animals and issues surrounding them, but I think there’s a perception that we’re all just about “horse hugging.” (OK. I DO hug my horses, but you know what I’m talking about. 🙂 )

I think many of us here are NOT overly sentimental and gooey. There’s a difference between being caring, compassionate and passionate and being enraged, over-the-edge, teary-eyed “fringies” as some people want to portray us as.

Anyway, in light of this little personal epiphany, I just sent off a simple, straight-to-the-facts letter to the Atlanta Journal Constitution (largest local paper.) Feel free to cut and paste if any of you feel it’s worth sending off to other news agencies.

BLM Wild Horse Round Up – Death Toll on the Rise

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is once again rounding up wild horses, this time in Nevada’s Calico Mountain Complex. At present, the death toll related to this round up stands at 39, with more deaths certain to come, as horses are herded by helicopters over frozen, rough terrain. Two foals have been euthanized because they were run so hard and so far that their hooves literally separated from the bone. 20 – 30 mares have spontaneously aborted their foals, primarily due to round up related stress. Other horses have been injured, with some having to be euthanized due to the seriousness of their injuries.
The BLM states that these “horse gathers” are humane. The rising death toll and number of injuries say otherwise.
This taxpayer funded fiasco is costing approximately $2 million, with 2,500 horses destined for holding facilities. There are already over 30,000 horses in BLM holding facilities. The budget to keep these animals in captivity is roughly $100,000 per day – again, taxpayer funded – with the cost projected to rise this year.
To date, the BLM is uncertain how many horses and burros remain in the wild. There has not been a hard count done in years. BLM environmental assessments state that the range is depleted and that horses are starving. Independent assessments state just the opposite. Interestingly enough, most of the horses brought in from the range are in great body condition – not starving, as the BLM would have the public believe. Additionally, it’s unclear if these horses are truly being moved for their own good, or if cattle and energy interests are the underlying reasons for removing wild herds from land that was designated for them by law.
Wild horse advocates across the country are calling for a moratorium on all round ups. These herds are a valuable part of our country’s wild heritage. Let’s keep them wild.

  6. LOUIE COCROFT Says:

THEY DO USE THAT “BLEEDING HEART” A LOT. IT HAS BEEN OVER USED BY THOSE THAT HAVE NO HEARTS. WE DO HAVE TO KEEP HITTING THEM WITH FACTS–ESPECIALLY THE MONEY FACTS–TAXPAYER MONEY FACTS. DO YOU REMEMBER THE INTERVIEW WITH WILD HORSE ANNIE? SHE SAID THAT SHE COULD NEVER ALLOW OR AFFORD EMOTION. SHE KNEW THAT THAT IS THE FIRST THING THEY USE TO DISMISS THE WHOLE ISSUE. I AM COUNTING ON THE FACT THAT THERE ARE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WHO DO HAVE HEARTS.

  7. LOUIE COCROFT Says:

MAR, I THINK IT IS WORSE. THE NEWS MEDIA IS MORE CONTROLLED THAN IT WAS THEN. THAT’S WHY WE HAVE TO YELL LOUDER.

    • Marilyn Wargo Says:

Yes, and General Electric, the largest company in the world, who owns half of Ruby Pipeline also owns news media. How do we find out who and what they own??? Is it all direct or through conglomerates? This gets very messy and maybe we can pinpoint some influences not to respond to us… mar
