Condition of Challis Herd Management Area right before disastrous roundup

Local residents said that the range was in the best condition in 80 years… the BLM rounded up 366 horses and removed 230 of them. At least 11 horses died. Foals were orphaned. Horses were rounded up off of private land repeatedly- despite repeated requests that no helicopter remove horses off that land. A helicopter tailed a stallion so close that he kicked at the struts.

Yes, this was a deadly roundup. I heard you talk tonight about the vet report saying that they know Cloud had a cut on his leg, none the less BLM says there were no injuries. The horror of the other roundups have made the Pryor roundup “Ideal” to BLM? That is the most pathetic ideal. I have been fighting to overturn any lawful way to chase any animals in the wild with helicopters. Aerial gunning may be coming to the lower 48 next. This is worse than James Watt. Mar

    • jo bunny Says:

      james watt????

    • Susan NY Says:

James Watt. That’s a trip down memory lane, not a good one!

The BLM’s corporate culture may be too far gone to repair. It’s a backwards cash for clunkers program – our cash goes into their pockets, but the environment – and our horses – suffer. They need to be out of the wild horse and burro program, and we need to join up with other wild animal folks and our Sentators and Congress to help that happen.

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

I think there may be some groups who are defending wolves and buffalo, that see the connection in treatment of wild horses. The helicopter is used against animals that have not been favored by the Interior Dept. Using them in Alaska has gone back and forth on aerial gunning for a long time. It is legal again. Idaho and Wyoming had been eager to buy new planes and helicopters to be able to run down predators for elimination. Expensive thrill rides with a canned hunt finish, closely shooting an exhausted animal.
        Parallels.
Don’t know who flew Challis, was it in an article? What is the name of the “other” roundup company? Did Sue Cattoor mention doing Challis?? mar

  2. Question Says:

Why didn’t TCF adopt/buy his offspring?

  3. Marilyn Wargo Says:

During the Reagan administration we had an Interior Secretary who was not going to reform the grazing fees and he gave amazing deals to lumber companies for our forest trees and angered many by doing things his way. He was a lawyer, was still at a Western think tank a few years ago, plotting things, who knows, maybe with BLM?? James Watt, didn’t like the endangered species act, either. Mar

  4. jo bunny Says:

who was hired to do the helicopter roundup at challis, cattoor or the other one?

    • Karen L. Says:

jb and Mar, I thought I had seen the name of the Challis contractor mentioned in an article, but right now I can’t find it. I did find a list of BLM roundup approved contractors for use 12/1/08 to 11/30/09. There are 6 companies, and none except Helicopter Roundup Svc. (Cattoor) show any mention at all of doing animal roundups. I did happen to see the name of the BLM’s contracting officer for these types of services. It is Toni Musgrove, Toni Musgrove@nbc.gov.

      • Janet Ferguson Says:

Karen, That’s amazing you ID’d the contracting officer. How did you do THAT?

Like my Grandfather used to say, “You see the strangest things when you don’t have a shotgun.”

      • Karen L. Says:

JF, The name is on the document that I linked later, last evening.

    • Morgan Williams Says:

The 2 main BLM Mustang and burro round up contractors are Dave (& Sue) Cattoor and Chris Cook/Heaverne. They are multi-millionaires via the BLM.

      Cattoor: Pryor Mt and Challis
      Cook: Sand Wash

  5. Janet Ferguson Says:

I posted some notes from the Howling Ridge Radio show on the blog for those that missed. Also shows are usually available to hear again, I think.

  6. Deb Bennett Says:

I just read an online article from The Press-Enterprise, written by David Danelski. It is titled, Wranglers Corral, Cart Off Wild Desert Burros. The BLM used KG Livestock to round up these burros. The photos that go with the article show the helicopter almost touching a burro and foal. The BLM first stated the burros were a nuisance that damaged wildlife habitai, then they say they were exceeding prescribed limits, and after that they say the burros consume food and water needed for bighorn sheep. Sounds familiar, huh?

    • Marilyn Wargo Says:

Yes, too familiar. The poor burros are not accounted for very well, either. BLM has depended upon a public too grossed out by the reality of horse and burro abuse, to come out and oppose them. They have been too right. That has changed, finally, I think. Many burro roundups are just posted as ‘nuisance’ and what goes on after that? When they are not on BLM land? When horses are chased off private land that has given horses sanctuary? There seems no escaping BLM. We got to stop them, get animals through the winter and start releasing them. mar

    • Morgan Williams Says:

Craig on the radio show last night said that the Majove desert burros were labeled a nuisance and competing for food with the tortoises. Alas, the burros are gone now. I am too late to voice my anger. I thought the final gather to zero out the Majove burros was in 2 weeks.

I read a report that the burros die within 6 months of captivity if they are not all killed in the pens with shot guns.

This, with all the other horror, is most vile. The smallest, most innocent version of the centuries old species of equine. How can anyone stare down such a creature, harrass it nearly to death with a roundup and then point a shot gun at it? I feel it compares to rounding up wild rabbits for sport. No sense can be found.

    • Morgan Williams Says:

      Deb B.

Would you please post a link to the article on the burro gathering? I need more facts for my arsenol & letter writing campaign.

      Thank you.

      Morgan

  7. Suzanne Moore Says:

For those that missed the radio broadcast – go to the Howling Ridge site and you can listen or download. My connection is too slow to listen to streaming, so I downloaded it.

  8. Karen L. Says:

This is the link to my earlier post regarding BLM WHB contractors, for what it’s worth.

    Click to access 3_BLM_WHB_CONTRACTOR_PRICING_EQUIPMENT&PILOT_DATA_eff_8-26-09.pdf

    • Morgan Williams Says:

      Karen L.

Thanks for the link. I did not see Chris Cook on the list. Did I miss it?

      Morgan

      • Karen L. Says:

Morgan, Hello! No, I don’t think you missed it—I didn’t see Cook or Heaverne (sp?) either. All I can figure is that maybe some familiar names are subcontractors or hidden as “dba’s”? No one was more surprised than I was that I found that particular little document!

      • Karen L. Says:

Morgan, Notice, also, that the top left of the document says that it was updated 8/26/09. Could some previous contractors have been removed/deleted at that time? That would be after Challis; I can’t think of the date of Sand Wash off the top of my head. Is it possible that some of the protests against brutality are being heard? Maybe Cattoor was advised to be careful in the Pryors (in addition to the obvious Cloud reason) so that more visual evidence against the BLM could not exist and therefore could not be circulated on the Internet. Does anyone know which contractor is scheduled to do the next “gather”?

  9. GOLDE W Says:

the helicopter company that did the Challis round up was Cayuse and the contractor was Cook…..it was in my backyard….it was brutal

  10. GOLDE W Says:

what an all out lie that there was drought in the Challis HMA…look at the photo I took of the HMA the day the round up started……the BLM are liars …this is an atrocity ..and all the horses that died and foals orphaned never should have happened……call the Senators on the Energy and natural resource committee and tell them the lies…and not to use BLM statistics to base their decision regarding the ROAM ACT>>>>>>THIS IS SO IMPORTANT……

    • Marilyn Wargo Says:

Michael Bennet, Colorado senator, sent me a reply to my letter on ROAM. He said that there were more horses and burros on BLM land at this time, than the land could support. Mark Udall responded about anti horse slaughter with the idea about ‘so many unwanted horses’. So slaughter has a place. It is so easy to just BS everyone. They can lie to our faces. Who can I email the roundup schedule to? Who would post it for us? Mar

      • Janet Ferguson Says:

Well, they are getting your emails.

Also they are thinking about your emails.

They are also taking the time to respond specifically to your emails.

Now, it’s your turn, send them another email with the counter arguments, with the actual facts. So they don’t agree, but, if you know they are reading your emails, perhaps it is a foot in the door, to provide them with the actual facts of the matter.

Educate on realities of the situation. Perhaps if they think there are too many unwanted horses, then the time is now to let them know “if that is so, then it’s important to pass the SB 1579 to REINSTATE the land they have been removed from, and make other changes necessary.

Find a really good person or office to send a cc of the email to as well, so they know that you and they are not the only ones in this frame, perhaps the Governor of that state, or the mayor of the city or even Senator Landrieu. If we send Senator Landrieu copies of all such correspondence, she will get to know all the angles she says she wants to learn to counteract these arguments going in !

      • Morgan Williams Says:

        Mar,

You have a complete BLM round up schedule? Please tell me how to locate this schedule.

        Morgan

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

Morgan, you have put your email address up can I send you the schedule and you post it? It is in a pdf and opens up easy. Wyoming has some info on the HMAs (Horse Management Areas) and I am hoping to get added corral info and then plan on going up there to watch and be there. I have not heard from TCF and have no idea if they are planning to be at this. I hope they share info. The horses being taken do not need to be removed. No more have the backing of BLM lies, because now they are disappearing. Now, in some places, they are no more. Maybe we can coordinate a meeting place just before the start of one of the early dates. Or I will stop in and say “HEY” on the way past TCF. But I am used to traveling alone, but if anyone wants to go, I hope they tell me. The corral locations I have not got, dates are probably correct because they will be there a while to cover the area. I think we need to be talking. How do we get into this? I left my email on the blog a few days ago. I think I will set one up just for Horse contacts.

The schedule came after I kept calling Tom Gorey, a BLM Publicity man. I told you as it happened. I have not been calling TCF because I did not want to bug busy people but I think I will again, and get this roundup visit squared away. There are roundups in California this winter. Oregon, Nevada. Now. No one told me not to post it. Mar

      • Barbara Steele Says:

Isn’t Mark Udall related to Stewart Udall who was the Secy. of the Interior(Kennedy) that put the Pyror Mt. Horse range in place?

      • Eileen O'Connor Says:

Mark Udall is Stewart Udall’s nephew. I sent an email to Mark Udall’s office last month and never received a reply. I asked him to continue the work started by his uncle. Probably would respond with blah, blah “thank you for your concern,” and lies from the BLM, anyway.

Stewart Udall is still practicing law, I believe, in New Mexico. I would love to know what he thinks about all of this.

    • Regina Says:

Golde, what do they do with the orphaned foals?

  11. Marilyn Wargo Says:

Golde W, If you could observe the horses a few days a week or a month and help be part of a local volunteer horses guard, would you do it? Mar

  12. GOLDE W Says:

ON MY WAY HOME TODAY AFTER 4 DAYS IN WASHINGTONDC…FIGHTING FOR THE HORSES, I DROVE THRU THE CHALLIS HMA…….AND NEVER SAW A HORSE…..THEY HAVE DECIMATED THE HERD……

    • Morgan Williams Says:

      Golde W.

Was it you with me in Senator Russ Feingold’s office in the meeting with Erin Meade? Along with James? I did not think to ask for your business card along with a card from James. I was in a race to get back to the airport for my flight home. I only had time to shake your hands and thank you for being there. It was a little funny that we had met each other first thing in the morning on the West front lawn! Then we were not complete strangers sitting together in the afternoon.

  13. Marilyn Wargo Says:

Wow, i am sorry to hear this. It is beginning to happen. Where are these horses Now? In adoption pens and holding? Should we post the roundup schedule? There are a series of roundups in Wyoming taking a large number in a huge area; Red Desert Complex. Some locations can be found, not all. There are so many, we need to either be good and watch and report or shut them all down. By civil disobedience. Mar

  14. Marilyn Wargo Says:

BLM has a text across the top of the roundup charts that says; (Dates) Subject to change due to outside influences. If you want the roundup schedule and if we all work on an area or just one roundup at a time, we can get locations and confirm start dates, call or email Christine or Makendra and ask to have it sent to your home email. We need to create a print out for us, and other groups who can help inside horse round up states by being an observer. It is becoming more and more important to stop the roundups. Let’s see who we can get to go who live in the states from humane groups/horse groups, locals, as well as any of us who can get to a location. There are roundups all winter, some in Oregon and California. Nevada. Isn’t there a number of active wild horse protection groups in Nevada? Maybe we need to be talking to them? What are they intending to do? Mar

    • Janet Ferguson Says:

Do you remember that early post by the Nevada lady taking about the Sagebrush person in charge in Nevada? There are lawsuits going on there from what she said.

  15. GOLDE W Says:

CONTACT THE MEMBERS OF THE ENERGY AND NATURAL RESOURCE COMMITTEE IN THE SENATE…..THEY HOLD THE KEY AT THIS POINT…UNLESS YOU CAN GET TO THE PRES. THEY DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT THE ROAM ACT WILL GO TO VOTE….WHERE WAS EVERYBODY WHEN WE JUST WERE IN WASHINGTON DC…AT “MUSTANGS ON THE HILL” LAST WEEK?……WE NEED TO GET THEM TO PUT A MORITORIUM ON ROUND UPS UNTIL THE SENATE CAN VOTE ON S1579……THE BLM SHOULD RESPECT THE CONGRESS…THAT PASSED HR1018…..BUT THEN BLM AND RESPECT DON’T GO TOGETHER…..THERE IS A 1000 HORSE ROUND UP PLANNED FOR WYOMING SOON….NOV……MAKENDRA KNOWS EVERYTHING

    • Marilyn Wargo Says:

Golde W, We were here, I wanted to invest in going to roundups. We know about Wyoming. If Makendra knows where the Corrals are I hope she will tell me. There may be 150 out of 150 horses being taken from New Mexico this week and I did not get a location or start date. The Red Desert Complex in Wyoming is a big area and they are taking many horses from half dozen HMAs. Mar

    • Morgan Williams Says:

      Golde,

If I understand correctly, Congressman Gruijvala from Arizona is working on/ or helping with a moritorium on the remaining 2009 BLM roundups until an investigation of the dept can be conducted. I think the idea of moritoriums gained much needed strength from:

“The United States Senate has passed a tough new bill that orders the Bureau of Land Management to institute a new plan for its management of wild horses. The legislation was introduced by Sen. Mary Landrieu (D), La.”————This is on the Blog Page titled “Senate Directs BLM to Get New Game Plan for Wild Horses in One Year”.

This is the information I phoned into my Senator yesterday to answer his question from Tuesday.

I also suggested that his staff contact Chris Hyde from The Animal Welfare Institute (the green folder given to us during the Press Conference).

      • Margaret Says:

Morgan I’ve read that BLM document. But I think most of us see the BLM as a rogue government entity running their own show. What happens if they go all these “gathers” and then have to turn the horses loose??? Are the horses classified as being domesticated because man was feeding them? or will be they be returned to their home turf and set free the way we want to see them????

    • Janet Ferguson Says:

      steady as she goes!

      • Morgan Williams Says:

        Janet:

I wanted to make a suggestion to you, Mar and all others who would like some of the info handed out during Mustangs On The Hill. Please contact Chris Heyde at 202-337-2332 at Animal Welfare Institute. Chris gave us a green folder with info and small binded book with all Capital Hill names, numbers and addresses. Perhaps Chris’s office will mail these materials to you.

        Morgan

  16. Marilyn Wargo Says:

JF, I wrote back to Michael Bennet that he was using a BLM lie and now that he knows it is a lie he had better not use it again, that I was very sad he had used a lie to me. I am stlll figuring what I want to write to Mark Udall. But Bennet pissed me off. I could not believe he used that line with me, “There are presently more wild horses and burros on BLM land than the land can support.” I said that it was impossible because so many horses had been removed at present. I said the only horses I feared did not have feed were in BLM jail. That ROAM was going to give these and those left in the wild a second chance to have the American public be sure they would never be managed to extinction again. Mar

    • Janet Ferguson Says:

      . . . . that works!. . .. .

    • Barbara Steele Says:

Just checked on Senator Mark Udall. He is the nephew of Stewart Udall, former head of the Dept. of Interior. He is a Democrat, and has voted 100% percent of the time with the Humane Society. So humane issues should be important to him.

From a BLM website–more information about Stewart Udall–Maybe Mark needs to be reminded about his family’s legacy!

      Wild Horses
Montana is home to one herd of wild horses which is located in the Pryor Mountains south of Billings along the Montana-Wyoming border. There are no wild horse herds in the Dakotas.

For more than a century, the Pryor Mountains have been home to free-roaming bands of wild horses. In 1968, interested individuals and groups convinced Interior Secretary Stewart Udall to set aside 31,000 acres in the Pryor Mountains as a public range for the wild horses living there. Subsequent to the Udall’s order, the passage of the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act in 1971 allowed for expansion of the range to areas where horses were “presently found.”

        Barabara:

Have you been able to catch the PBS series this last week on our National Parks? It is the series by filmaker Ken Burns. IT IS FABULOUS. You will learn boatloads about our country’s wildlife reserves, national parks, public lands & all the tough persons behind the conservation efforts. Many ‘big picture’ thinkers devoted their whole lives to our beloved land and wildlife. Steward Udall is mentioned a zillion times. I have watched part 1 of the series 3 times this week. Installment #2 is tomorrow (Sunday). I tried to keep notes but I will have just going to find a way to buy the DVD set—– as with buying the Cloud DVD set.

I am thrilled at the timing of this series to coinside with the renewed battles on many fronts to save America’s wildlife (mustangs, burros, wolves, buffalo, etc)

      • Barbara Steele Says:

I have been watching the series and want to get the set. It is so interesting about all the battles to preserve land that, in the beginning, not many people including ranchers wanted. Here is the link to Assateague Island National Seashore on the N.P.S. website. Very interesting that Assateague ponies are the featured photo on the website. Tourism is the big factor here and it would be in the west if there was a listing of all the herd sites with information on how to see the horses.

        http://www.nps.gov/asis/index.htm .

      • Linda Says:

I have talked to Udall’s staff and emailed him and have received an email response and will continue to educate him on the topic.

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

One thing I noticed, even decades ago, was BLM and others did not want people out on horse range. The secrecy that was met by, again, outsiders or interested parties was like a stone wall. Finding herds was often done by approaching locals, some who would be protective of the animals, others who would misdirect for other reasons. That the horses were not easy to find and people even discouraged from seeing them normal. It never should have been that way. It encouraged the stealing of horses for sale to slaughter that Cattoor thought he had a right to do. He wasn’t the only one.
BLM knows all manner of people to haul off ‘geldings’ and truck loads of unadoptable horses. This is what we have so little information on. If only we had an insider who has decided that BLM has gone too far. mar

  17. Marilyn Wargo Says:

Nephew, yes, but he is rancher influenced. mar

  18. Marilyn Wargo Says:

Morgan, You going to put up the roundup Schedule?? Hope I sent Oct, in Yellow… mar

    • Morgan Williams Says:

      I am working on it.

Cloud Foundation put up your schedule

      • Morgan Williams Says:

        Janet F:

This was not my schedule. Mar sent me a BLM schedule in PDF format. She asked me to post the schedule. I gave it my best shot. Today, I see the very well organized posting by the Cloud Foundation a few blog pages ahead.

I tried to be very clear, when I posted the schedule, that I did nothing to gather the data. I only attempted to post the data at the request of Mar W. I did not want to step on any one’s toes or possibly even cause confusion amongst the bloggers.

        Morgan

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

Morgan, you did good, you got the info out. This was not on anyones toes… It was enlightening. Thank you for your patience. Mar

  19. Barbara Steele Says:

So these roundups will add to the 30,000 plus horses in captivity making a total of 45,000 plus horses. What is the BLM thinking—oh that’s right they don’t have a clue. I think these numbers need to be sent along to the Senate committee and the Congress critters. This is not responsible economically as well as humane. Looks like the BLM is making sure of job security for the long term.

  20. jan eaker Says:

the BLM’s planning views for the red desert gathers are on the website http://www.blm.gov/wy/st/en/info/NEPA/rfodocs/red-desert.html
I googles red desert HMA gathers and got right to the site, as always, their reasoning is skewed, especially in light of the fact that they will just be adding more horses to the growing numbers they say they can no longer feed; unfortunately, the comment period ended on 10-1, however, in one of the plans, there is mention of euthanasia, which I thought they had been told they couldn’t do, if there is contact information for Sen. Landrieu, this should go to her,

    • Janet Ferguson Says:

I will personally make sure that i, for one, send the above along with the roundup schedule to Ms. Landrieu — via email and hard copy

    • Janet Ferguson Says:

I made a word processing document out of both of these items and when you put a single-space every time the State changes (on the roundup list) you realize any state can appear anywhere in the list multiple times (i.e. not listed alphabetically) This gives the appearance that one state isn’t getting the “brunt” of the depopulation of the species.

Haven’t added it yet by state.

      • Janet Ferguson Says:

        Is “sub-species-cide” a word?

        homi-cide
        sui-cide
        species-cide

They are not killing the individual horses, but they are wiping out the SUB species of horse. (proven genetically)

    • Janet Ferguson Says:

as I shlepped thru that I notice they use different roundup methods depending on the available food and water. . .
so. . . if the range was in such bad shape inthe Pryors, why didn’t they use hay trapping instead of helicopters.?

I was in a race to get back to the airport for my flight home. I only had time to shake your hands and thank you for being there. It was a little funny that we had met each other first thing in the morning on the West front lawn! Then we were not complete strangers sitting together in the afternoon.

      Golde:

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

  22. jan eaker Says:

Have just emailed Senator Landrieu and my senator from Illinois a copy of the gather information as well as the website from my post above concerning the Red Desert gathers, I plan on contacting all the Committee members by tuesday at the latest, am asking for a moratorium on all these proposed gathers,
it saddens me to know that in the pens of WY, right now, there are many COnquistadors and Grumpies standing hopeless, with no hope of a reprieve and a return to their freedom,
Was also wondering if you are aware of what the “3 strikes” rule is and how it impacts all age horses?
There are 4 yearlings that weren’t adopted in Mequon WI on the 26th, now they will go to Belle Plain IA, if no one adopts them there, they will go to MS, if they aren’t adopted from there, it is my understanding that they are considered “Unadoptable”, and will be sent to live out the rest of their lives in long term holding facilities, such as the infamous” 3 strikes ranch” in Nebraska, only because they are brown and bay horses, not colorful enough to catch anyone’s eye.

    • Barbara Steele Says:

And of the 14,500 plus horses gathered how many foals will be born in captivity and how many older horses like “Grumpy” will be forced to live out the rest of their lives without their family bands, rather than be allowed to die a natural death on the mountain?

      • jan eaker Says:

I don’t think any of these older horses will live very long lives in captivity, i think their fate is much grimmer,

      • Janet Ferguson Says:

how many tiny foals will lose their lives inthe roundups

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

They need to be freed. It seems that euthanasia at a roundup site may still be under consideration. mar

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

Please try to see that there is a way to save them, free them and none will have to die far from their families. No matter what Int. Dept and BLM have been doing, we will undo it. There is no way we can let the horses lose. mar

      • jan eaker Says:

        At the BLM website that I posted above, euthanasia is mentioned as an option in the gather notes;
also searched BLM for the Steens area in OR; found out that horses are allotted 3,648 AUMs and livestock get 9,577 AUMs; in the past 5 years, livestock leasing has brought in revenues of $31, 805 to the BLM, that’s not per year, that’s the TOTAL for 5 years; an AUM is an Animal Unit Month of active grazing.

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

Jan, yes, i have a quote that says; of animals 10 years and older; any animals within this age class that are in the Henneke Category of 2 or less and have no chance of timely improvement would be evaluated for euthanasia. Any euthanasia would be in accordance with Washington Office Instruction Memorandum 2009-041.
As I said, i fear this may mean euthanasia in the field, at the roundup sites. mar

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

What this may mean is that the horses they do not want to release or haul could be killed at the roundup. Why else do they mention euthanasia in a gather assessment? Mar

      • Janet Ferguson Says:

now the BLM can scare everybody with unadoptable older horses and know it is their next “cash crop” as we will come to their rescue.

        (department of cynicism department)

      • Janet Ferguson Says:

I think they may (possibly) mention it because if it is necessary to put one down they have cleared it beforehand.

Like a busted leg or something.

Also on the blog, American Herds, be sure to see the blog directly before the current blog posted. It has a lot of info on the brands (if you haven’t already seen, I’m usually the last one to learn this stuff) they use at BLM and several responses indicating (from BLM) that the 3 strikes go to long term holding at this point but THEY ARE STILL ADOPTABLE.

Our local state humane society has a “black dog” club — it is specifically for assisting with adoption of black dogs who have been shown to be passed over for adoption — some think because their faces cannot be seen as easily — so maybe there needs to be a “Plain Brown Horse” Club for adoptions! Maybe a children’s author needs to revisit the “Ugly Duckling” story only make it about a fuzzy brown mustang who turns out to be a special horse. (Of course we always knew it was special anyway).

Back at the ranch, why always show them in the books as so beautiful when they sometimes look like ugly ducklings.

      • jan eaker Says:

Yes JF, it’s called “Black Dog Syndrome” I have 4 black rescue dogs at hom and I guess the BLM would say that the 3 strikes horses still can be adopted, but how does one get to any of the long term holding facilities????? The reason the one in Nebraska was found is that a guy was flying his airplane over the ranch and saw all the dead horses and was appalled; these horses don’t get taken to any of the adoption events, so how do they have any chance of finding a home? I called someone about some of the internet adoption horses that had no bids on them, got no response.

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

Jan, Someone flew over and saw All The Dead Horses… Were the dead horses investigated? Why were they dead? Were they starved?? I have not heard this and thought the One there was just known… Mar

    • Marilyn Wargo Says:

Please do not feel that there is ‘no hope for a reprieve and a return to freedom’ as we are trying to get them freedom and a return to their lands. ROAM and a stop to roundups and release of confined horses. mar

    • Janet Ferguson Says:

the bay mares throw the best appaloosas I have heard

    • Janet Ferguson Says:

      that Iowa is 10/16/09

    • Janet Ferguson Says:

When did this flyer see “all the dead horses.” Where exactly was he and how did you get this information — from what sources? I haven’t heard of “all the dead horses” either.

I know there was a “3 Strikes Ranch” but that wasn’t the Nebraska BLM Holding Facility, I think it was said to have possibly been a person who allegedly took $$ from BLM to care for and kept $$ for himself speculatively, etc. etc. You can google “3 Strikes”.

      • Janet Ferguson Says:

That’s a thought, tho. Find a flyer who is willing to buzz these gathers from a respectable altitude, with a telephoto lens or something someone can tape ’em. Eye in the sky.

    • Linda Says:

Good point! I will get those out tomorrow to my favorite “elected officials.”

  24. Marilyn Wargo Says:

Morgan, Thanks, The original schedule shows the number of horses at the HMA and how many they will ‘gather.’ At times the number being removed is the entire population. It really is down to that. Sorry, I was unable to get online last night. We still need corral addresses. Some of the people who know Ginger and Makendra may know, Makendra may know about Wyoming sites for the half dozen Red Desert Complex roundups. I really wish we could keep all these animals in place, they should not be removed. This entire activity brought on by BLM is so diabolical. They have been heading this way for years. Some of us have been asking for a moratorium for 5 years. This time we have so much evidence of a management to extinction that we shold be able to dispel all the old lies and bullsh…with the present reality. That is what I told Michael Bennet, there are not enough horses left to be considered damaging to the range. That is not an issue it is a lie. The horses are gone.

Hand written letters from people who do not point out any affinity with ‘groups’ have a strong impact. There are ever prejudices built up towards particular groups. Write for yourself. Mar

  25. Marilyn Wargo Says:

Morgan and Makendra have the original schedule in a pdf, which is what Mary Landrieu should get from someone. Maybe we can get the pdf up for people to download. Mar

    • Morgan Williams Says:

      Mar,

I only have the PDF document that you sent to me by email yesterday.

Makendra Silverman is the go-to person on this blog.

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

I have no idea what we can do but the BLM schedule is now up, in original form. pdf. here. But it was because you got it up, I think. Thanks again. Mar

  26. Marilyn Wargo Says:

Makendra, If we cannot bring up certain things here, then you ought to tell us what that is. If we need to keep some things off the site, PLease say so. mar

  27. Marilyn Wargo Says:

Barbara had said we should have a Bulletin Board here? Mar

    • Barbara Steele Says:

A bulletin board here would be nice but there has been no response. A Yahoo group would be good. I go to a Yahoo SaveMustangs group and the Chincoteague pony group. Also Facebook seems to be getting a lot of action. The Yahoo groups don’t seem to have as many posts lately.
I do understand that TCF wants us to spend our time getting involved directly with contacting congress critters, writing letters to editors, etc. As I said before I have learned so much in such a short period of time. The challenge is how to use this information in our own unique way so we don’t come off as just spouting out talking points. I am sending handwritten letters to my PA Senators asking them to co-sponsor the ROAM Act as sent from the House and will send letters to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee but I really believe that reaching out to a un-informed public is the most promising. It was the public that cried out against slaughtering wild horses last fall. Maybe when the new Cloud PBS comes out publicity could be generated to go along with the film nation-wide. Lots of little girls and their parents to reach who will in turn contact the congress. JMO

      • Regina Says:

I agree! Makendra, let me know if Ginger is interested in getting information to the schools to promote the special in relation to an essay contest. If we can come up with a prize that would go to the SCHOOL for the best essay, they’d participate.

        Regina

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

Yes, That was what I thought, do flyers and have them in place for the Cloud Show. From Riding barns to feed stores and just local bulletin boards.

A bulletin board here might happen if one of us were to call Makendra. mar

      • Morgan Williams Says:

        Regina,

Would you please contact me by email?

        morganbreed@hotmail.com

The idea of getting into the schools was brought up by Makendra Silverman & Valerie Kennedy during the last Howling Radio program several weeks. I began trying to formulate a plan & sent it on to the Cloud Foundation and to Valerie Kennedy. I had offered my notes to the group on this blog too. I would like to hear your idea. I understand (from the people currently running the postcard campaign) that we only have about 30 days left to make a difference with the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

We have to realize that although the horses do not seem to have much time, we must stop the roundups regardless of what happens to ROAM. Bills have died in Committee and been done better and brought back. If you are in this for the long haul, this very well can happen. reintroduced bills have made it through many times. it is not the end. But ending the roundups is necessary to any future horses and burros have on their own range.

We all want the best out come ASAP but we must not limit ourselves to thinking a program to educate people has only so much time. There is time to educate. mar

  28. Marilyn Wargo Says:

Well, Mary said she was censored. There were gaps in her post. But I just feel we need to know if there is something that could affect a legal case outcome. But we seem to be OK. Do you have access to the post that was about Cattoor and company and the conviction by federal court? I have wanted to reread that and it is not there?? I guess I feel that we have stepped on toes that might kick back. Mar

    • Morgan Williams Says:

      Mar,

Fortunatly, we live in a country with freedom of speech. You may freely express what’s on your mind or heart. I respect this right. But then I have the right to choose what I will or won’t listen to.

I am not sure what exactly you perceive to be wrong with this blog or the people who administrate the blog. You made a statement “I guess I feel that we have stepped on toes that might kick back”. Huh? Kick back????

We were given this blog to support each other as we battle together and also to assist The Cloud Foundation. For the most part, we have followed the spirit of this blog. I just spent a day on Capital Hill with fellow equine advocates, the Cloud Foundation and other fine professional people from all over the country. I received support from Makendra to make the meeting with my Senator go well. I recieved an extremely compassionate embrace from Ginger when I spoke of my attendance being done in memory of my Mother. Ginger took the time to listen to me on a very challenging day that was preceeded by a disappointing day for her & others in Virginia.

Time to move on now. Too much work to be done yet. I do not want to see America lose this battle on behalf of our Mustangs, Burros and domestic equines.

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

Morgan, i do not want to see TCF get sued because we are saying what we want. I get nervous because we are likely read by some hostile individuals who want to know what we are up to, that is fine, but I believe in Not burning all the bridges. That’s all. Mar

      • Janet Ferguson Says:

When I first wrote on this blog re the bad things going on I started having horrible nightmares about shadowy figures waiting for me. . . .and they weren’t horses!

    • Karen L. Says:

Mar, Are you wanting to read a particular post that is missing? If you want to read anything about Cattoor, just Google it. The actual court documents of his indictment are on-line. I found tons of interesting stuff on him when I was looking for the list of helicopter contractors that I posted/linked above (the other day). We shouldn’t be able to be sued for discussing actual quotes from public records.

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

I just had wondered where the Cloud Blog piece on Cattoor was. Do you think we can get helicopter flight plans? I actually think we have been far from too nasty. mar

      • Karen L. Says:

Mar, I didn’t see an obvious way to find “flight plans”. Knowing the chosen contractor for a roundup and possibly their work schedule would be necessary. What’s unclear to me is that some of the well known names in these rounups are not on that list—Cook, Heaverne, for example.

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

Thanks, I think flight plans are filed locally. It may be a way to find a crew from nearby. Funny that those people are not on the list. mar

    • Roxy Says:

It is gone from YouTube also. On Cattors site they have more legal documents than were produced here – one being the other people indicted were found not guilty, and according to Cattoors they just plead guilty to a misdeamenor, not a felony, as they did not want to mess with the time and money of the court – I didn’t really bother to read all of it.

We don’t want to be defamating anyones character, so I think that was probably why that YouTube and accompanying incomplete information is removed. Too bad, it does put a black eye on all of us.

So, mistake made, done, gone, now move on.

The “truth and the whole truth” is usually better to defend. Freedom of speech does not allow one to lie about another, wherein their character is damaged.

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

Roxy, was that it?? Did We get a black eye, really? Good luck with your move. We are still looking and hoping for what we need plus not too much $. The snow stays on the mountains longer now. There are so many roundups. All those young and old, Horses in holding are haunting me. mar

      • Roxy Says:

Well, a little bruise maybe, not good to call someone a felon when they are not -but lets not worry about it, its behind us – mistakes are made all the time – just watch the news – ha.

Yes, my dreams are not sweet either. But I’m positive there will e a reckoning – we must just keep writing. I’m so broke right now waiting for my retirment to clear all its beurocrataic hurdles, so still sending e-mails. But wil be sending hard copies soon I hope.

I thought e-mails had to be treated the same as letters – was so where I worked anyway.

Lots of interesting stuff on the R.T. Fitch site about taking horses off, breeding Pyrors in captivity as A RARE BREED, then putting horses back on if too many die out or genetics start looking goofy – are your reading that? I will be making sure those facts are correct, no resaon do doubt, but best to do our research don’t you think?

Anyway sounds like a shell game, and who gets paid to put the new horses out there and who pays for those horses? Crazy crazy stuff!

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

Yes, I was surprised to hear it. It is just more manipulation. Those who are in the ‘know’ with BLM are surely paying a high price (their integrity) for the privilege. When a person can not answer a question in a professional manner, and so many have been like this, then you know you are being had. But we have the opportunity to change this story into what it ought to have been decades ago. I am just glad we get this chance. It is a miracle that we still have such magical horses in our nation. mar

    • Roxy Says:

Is this the sme Mary who has posted on R.T. Fitch – perhaps TCF is waiting to see if her info can be validated?

  29. Barbara Steele Says:

Here is an interesting link I found from Horse Nation, a website that is not up at the present. Seems to be good info about grazing, animal units, and makes note about the large corporations that hold much of the grazing rights. Always interesting to get to the bottom of the story. A rather novel way “to keep the wild horses on their property” is offered. Anybody know anything about this group–Horse Nation?

Where Are the Horses—Mustang Jack challenges BLM to show him the horses, all 33,000 of them. I suspect that there are NOT 33,000 horses and I suspect where they might have ended up. There has been no outside accounting of these animals and it has been very “suspect” since they would not show Madeline Pickens these horses. Read it—

Maybe the BLM is putting them back on the range so they can get rich rounding them up and putting them up for sale.

Barbara, That is the real rub, that there is no accountability at all. I fear for all these horses, this madness is after them, they do not deserve this. mar

If you go to Horse Power link, then listen to the 11-17-08 Part 1 meeting that is posted there, listen on a couple of minutes, they talk about how the gathers in Idaho are completely STATE FUNDED and in Oregon other parties are assisting the BLM by providing a pot of money for roundups.

This is a new concept to me. . . and they use special terminology which this speaker uses, to describe this phenomenon. I am going to listen later at length but wanted to put this up here as I was unaware other parties, including STATES are funding these gathers so the “BLM doesn’t have to pay”. What a can of worms.

JF, You found something, for sure. This could be conflict of interest. If a state wanted horses rounded up, why would BLM be involved or why would a state be involved on BLM land? Mar
