Calico Roundup: Humane Observer Report for Thursday, January 14, 2010

Today the Calico Mountain roundup took place once again at Soldier Meadows.  Madeleine Pickens with sister Chris, faithful old canine companion Oliver, and staff came to view for themselves this process of removing our wild horses from their homes.  Attorney Valerie Stanley, wildlife ecologist Craig Downer, and I were present along with a “Good Morning America” crew.  While be escorted by BLM on the way to the capture site, we saw the two huge truck/trailer vehicles full of horses being shipped to Fallon that day, and Valerie Stanley and Jerry Reynoldson saw a mare down in the first trailer.  We promptly told Gene Seidlitz, who said he’d contact the driver.

(semi truck trailer transporting Calico horses in late Dec. photo by Craig Downer, blog manager’s addition)

BLM State Director Ron Wenker greeted us along with BLM Wild Horse and Burro Management Specialist Bolstadt and two additional public information specialists  — Heather Emmons, Managing Public Information Specialist, with another Public Information Heather from Idaho (sorry, Heather; I can’t locate your last name!) — and a larger than usual cadre of security people.  Gene Seidlitz and Lisa Ross were, of course, present as well.  Alan Shepherd, BLM’s lead Wild Horse and Burro Specialist, took the lead in speaking on behalf of BLM, followed by Gene Seidlitz.

BLM set aside this extra day to observe the roundup operation outside its committed Monday, Wednesday, Saturday schedule, in order to accommodate Ms. Pickens and the ABC crew.  Craig Downer, Valerie Stanley, and I were asked by Madeleine to accompany her, and we were very glad to do so.  Accompanied by several of her staff, Madeleine and Chris and staff arrived at the capture site carried by three helicopters BLM had given previous permission to arrive.  Driven by Jerry Reynoldson, former staffer of Senator Harry Reid, and escorted in a caravan of nine four-wheel drive vehicles, we arrived a good bit later at approximately 9:55 a.m.

The day started on a dark note.  BLM staff along with Sue Cattoor were angry, stating that Ms. Pickens and her helicopter crew had reneged on their agreement and had inappropriately flown over capture airspace, alleging that they had spooked the wild horses and jeopardized the entire day’s operation.  Alan Shepherd said he immediately downed their (Cattoor) aircraft when he saw the Pickens helicopters.  This was an unverified statement since no one from BLM nor the Cattoors were flying or able to see the wild horses.  We were tersely informed that it would be at least two hours before any incoming horses  would arrive.

After listening patiently to the anger and frustration communicated by Alan Shepherd, Gene Seidlitz, and Sue Cattoor, Madeleine Pickens stated that they had flown over what they believed was well away from the capture area; that they stayed high enough so that the no more than 200 horses they had seen were not at all concerned about their presence. She said they came down lower to view one small band of five horses, who merely looked up inquisitively and did not move off their grazing spot.  She stated, “This is not a friendly environment,” and was diplomatic but clearly outraged at BLM’s accusation that she had spooked the wild horses.

We looked at the approximately 80 horses still in pens, to be shipped the following day (Friday) to Fallon’s new facility. The horses are separated into weanlings six months and older; mares; stallions, and mare/foal combination.  Here is some of what we saw.

Uncertain youngsters.

Stallions.  Some really beautiful horses.  Alan Shepherd states these horses were at a virtual ideal weight.  He felt the mares were generally well but a little underweight.

Displaying a wary curiosity…

2:18:51 p.m.

When roundup operations resumed, we first saw the helicopter off in the distance.  It hovered for long periods before we could see any horses, and I was wondering what was going on.  When the horses came up over the rise and we were able to finally see them, it cut deep:  They were so far away, they looked like ants, but we could clearly see they kept squaring off and facing the helicopter, moving back toward it and trying to head uphill back into the safety of their mountains.  The helicopter would face them like some omnipotent monster and sometimes slowly head toward them until they turned back toward the trail the pilot wanted them to travel.  Here you can see the horses trying to move up the mountain toward the terrible machine.

2:19:12

Below, we can see the defeated horses running back down the hill toward the trail.  The helicopter has closed the distance between himself and the wild horses.  My video clip shows trotting and cantering horses, not easy on the uneven ground.  They are not walking casually.

Above, the first to arrive is mom with her baby valiantly struggling to keep up.

…followed closely by the helicopter now to get them into the pens. Note the Judas horse in front (the Cattoors’ horse, “Shorty,” a good horse who knows his job and does it faithfully.  You can also see Dave Cattoor standing where he and Shorty stood just a half our or so about even even with the last horse.

Great photos and a fascinating account of a very palpably uncomfortable environment that day among the BLM and observers. Where is LeCarre when we need him? Never mind, we have Elyse! Most interesting account of a very very unhappy place.

Thank you to The Cloud Foundation for bringing this cutting edge report to light.

  2. Savewildhorses Says:

Oh, Sue Cattoor was really angry at Madeleine Pickens for spooking the horses away from her husband’s taxpayer funded helicopter? Poor little millionaire Sue and her horse rustling, felon husband.

Wonder if the BLM will separate this mare and her foal too. These round ups absolutely MUST stop. There is NO reason they should be happening.

  3. Joette Snyder Says:

Anyone with a heart can see the stress these poor animals are being forced to endure. These people are not human, hard to think about how this is a days work you could sleep at nigh.

  4. Ronnie Says:

First saw the photos. Quickly read the article. Mare down in horse transport trailer. We know horses have died during roundups. Die in captivity, within hours, days, months… How many? How many?

Brutal roundups in brutal weather. Heat or cold. Run for miles. Terror, exhaustion, colic, injuries… In the pens, batted with plastic bags on poles. Prodded. Screamed at. Laughed at. What else that we do not know of.

Once free, now with a number/symbol stamped on their hide. Once free, manes flowing, eyes bright. Now haggard, bewildered, depressed. Some may struggle and fight when they first come into the pens, but so soon, trapped, hopeless. No more running wild and free through the grass and open range. Crammed in pens, Crammed in trailers. How many thirst? How many want, need food? How many need rest? How many die?

My first thought when I saw the photos here and scanned the article: KILL BUYERS. The mentality is the same. A horse is a “thing.” Not at living, feeling, being. A THING.

“Kill Buyers” with a our government’s name: BLM.

I would like to say that horses, as they are animals, generally don’t care about being laughed at. They do feel but NOT LIKE HUMAN BEINGS. Please stop putting anthropomorphic feelings on these ANIMALS. Real life is NOT Disney.

my comment to you is: HOW WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT A HORSES THINKS OR FEELS ?

ARE YOU A HORSE ? OBVISOULY NOT; SO HOW WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT THEY THINK ?
Have you seen the forlorn look in their eyes; or the yearling’s faces as they led away from Mare
truthfully; I think Freedom is smarter and braver than many people I have met in my own life!

      • Anna White Says:

ps I know what the word: anthropomorphic menas; it’s a big word’; but doesn’t mean much !

anthropomorphic menas: where people try to put human characteristics on animals; see’ I actually think the critters have a higher sense of evolution and intelligence than man; this is because the critters have been on the planet for a far greater amount of time than Man has !

      • Janet Ferguson Says:

This is a very interesting subject. This subject has far reaching ripple effect throughout all of mankind’s history, throughout animal research circles and circles of human development research, too!

I think we have sympathy and empathy as our God-given attributes as people, this is how we learn. This helps us to “get” what animals are doing and also, when we were hunted BY animals, to understand their intentions.

We can sympathize with the horses as they are removed from their ranges where their habitual activites, movements, and associates have been removed by force.

I think loud noises (fear of) are common to all species; fear of falling; fear of the unknown.

It doesn’t have to be anthropomophism (sp?) to be an accurate assessment of what they are going thru.

Antropormophism would be if we sent all the horses registered letters asking them to meet at the BLM corrals for tea and toast.

      • kas0859ohio Says:

Holly- Maybe horses don’t feel like human beings do, but they do have feelings and have emotions. My horse does not like to be compared to an ass. Have you ever talked to your horse without speaking? I have, they listen. Have you ever “heard” them talk to you? They do if you listen. Just watch a horse with a new “haircut” they often feel self-conscious, which is a very human type emotion.
PS If you do some research- Disney based many of its stories on the real life and EMOTIONS of animals in the wild. They play they love and they FEEL. -Kathy

      • Suzanne Moore Says:

Holly, I DO hope you don’t own horses. If you can’t understand what they are feeling, you can’t very well take care of them adequately. I’ve seen a number of examples of animals that don’t like to be laughed at. Horses are VERY sensitive to body language because it is their natural way of communicating with each other and us. They can read us much better than we can read them because humans have lost their ability to even realize we’re sending out body language messages, so concentrated are we on vocal communication.

Recent studies with horses have demonstrated conclusively that they are able to form abstract concepts and remember them for a long time. This was in “The Horse Magazine” and on line at http://thehorse.com. Also reported in the same magazine even more recently that horses really ARE able to count. Maybe not to a million, but over three or four for sure.

Perhaps we should not be dogmatic about the intelligence and emotions of ANY animal until we know more than we do now.

        A Poem…

Tell the bison not to go

        where they have always been,

        instruct the elephants to read

        and yield their ancient memories

        of where the water is.

Force wolves and bears to learn

the boundaries that have never been-

        the ink that lies unseeable

between this tree, that blade of grass.

Teach them all to read the maps

that are invisible. Make them know

what is not real, does not exist

to moon or stars, and stubborn as they are

        kill them for not learning

        what we will not share.

…for the bison and wolves of the Yellowstone ecosystem and Northern Rockies, for the trees and plants and rocks, for the elephants and orangutans, for the bees and the gorillas, the butterflies and birds, for the voles and nematodes, for the frogs and salamanders and the bats, for the otters, dolphins, whales, and polar bears, for the turtles and the coral and the krill, for the plankton and the leopard, for the beetles and the worms, for the waters, earth, and air…

These images will always break my heart, those faces so helpless behind bars. Still, I’m glad to hear Elyse was there as well as Madeleine. I’m very happy to know GMA is finally doing a story on the wild horses. I hope they do a good job of telling all sides of the story. It sounds like the BLM and Cattoor crew did a nice “gentle” job of bringing in the horses. I hope it was not all for “show” and they will continue to “be nice”. Does anyone know yet (or when will they know) what happened to the mare that was down in the trailer?

    • Anne Says:

      “The Mare died…; (mostly due to stress; lack of feed; water and lack of protection from the elements at the trap site; and the “journey was too much for this mare;

      just like the BLM’s journey for the stallions;mares + foals is too much for some of the horses; the abuse of BLM is;

ps best way to see the BLM is look at roundup pens pix !(esp. of the Foal lying out “spread eagle on wet straw !
where they left “Hope Springs Eternal to “perish; and when the little foal did not perish quickly? they shot her !@

  8. Cathy Kindsfather Says:

Another day of horror, another day I feel sickened. Our beautiful wild horses that deserve the highest of respects in the animal kingdom! Its a tragedy!!!

I have a big question. It is my understanding that last year, Mrs. Pickens offered to buy, adopt all the wild horses in blm holding facilities! That she was going to buy some million acres for their sanctuary refuge!! I am informed that her request to do so was denied by blm!!! If this is true, and I think it is, WHY did they refuse this offer???

These roundups and horrid treatment of our wild horses are not, of the people, by the people, or for the people!! Surely not for the good of the horses. Its for the benefit of special interest and private business.

It has to stop!!! Mr. Obama and staff. If you are reading this I must say to you. Don’t let this be on your conscience, the eradication of our wild herds!!
What will you say to your children and grandchildren when they ask you why did the government kill the beautiful horses and take them away from us?
They are so pretty and we want to go for a drive and see them in the hills and mountains, but we only see cows. I know they were there once, my teacher at school showed us pictures. Grandpa, why did you let them do it??? They did not look hungry in the pictures.

Yes I am emotional!!! I can’t stand to see what is happening to our beautiful wild horses! To see the government allowing this action against the publics overwhelming protest! They are using millions in taxpayers money for demonic deeds that are not approved by the majority of people!! Its all done against the Congressional Act of 1971, against the advice of a Federal judge, against the will of the masses!! Are we still in America, Land of The FREE, By The People, of The People, For The People? It feels like dictatorship.

WHERE IS THE TRANSPARENCY??? WHY IS THE OPERATION REMOVED FROM PUBLIC VIEWING JUST AS THE NEW HOLDING FACILITIES IN THE MID WEST IS???

BURNED BY THE BURNS AMENDMENT!!!!! ERADICATE THE AMENDMENT, NOT OUR MUSTANG SPECIES.

Cathy- I’m not sure what the ORIGINAL offer was. There are so many versions out there from both sides. (I hate to use the phraseology- of taking “sides” but for lack of better words I do.)

I wish Madeleine would clarify what exactly her offer was or what her terms were. -Kathy

I GUESS I SUBMITTED TOO FAST, SORRY. ALSO I GUESS I’M NOT SUPPOSED TO BE USING UPPER CASE LETTERS–I DIDN’T KNOW UNTIL ONE OF THE PROMPTS ON A WEBSITE TOLD ME. IT JUST SEEMED EASIER THAN SHIFTING AND EASIER TO READ. I GUESS I’VE BEEN “SHOUTING” ON ALL OF THE COMMENT PAGES. YOU WERE ALL TOO NICE TO TELL ME. I’M NEW AT THIS–i’ll tone it down.

  10. LOUIE COCROFT Says:

will any of this make any difference to the horses in the holding pen? will they get windbreaks or shelter? i still haven’t gotten any feedback on the palomino valley facility–where they took the horses from the STEALTH ROUND-UP IN CEDARVILLE.

  11. Cathy Kindsfather Says:

I CONCUR. UPPER CASE IS LOOKING GOOD!!!

MAYBE WE HAVE TO SCREAM NOW TO BE HEARD!! RESPECT OUR HERDS!!

  12. LOUIE COCROFT Says:

ARE YOU SURE?–IT SURE IS EASIER.

  13. Renee Antaya Says:

How pathetic a nation we have become to do this to our wild FREE horses who are AMERICAN ICONS and do not deserve to be treated this way. This is their land and their mountains. LEAVE THEM ALONE!

  14. Marilyn Wargo Says:

Thanks again, Elyse and TCF. I see those eyes wondering and I know and they don’t. What they must live through is illegal for all to do but it is being done. It just gets worse. If we can create management that keeps populations within certain parameters why can’t we just end this and change so there will be no more roundups? The contractors are Rich. Let them retire. Let the horses go home. mar

  15. Laura Evans Says:

MAYBE THAT SHOULD BE OUR NEW MOVEMENT. SCREAM FOR THE WILD HORSES BECAUSE NO ONE IS LISTENING TO THEIR SCREAMS!

THE HEARTBREAKING SCENES OF THE WILD HORSE ROUNDUPS SHOWS THE BLATANT SPECIAL INTEREST INFLUENCE (RANCHING) WITH OUR SUPPOSEDLY IMPARTIAL AND CARNG BLM AND DEPT. OF THE INTERIOR. BOB ABBEY AND KEN SALAZAR SHOULD BE AS ASHAMED OF THEIR ACTIONS AS I AM OF THEM.

THESE HORSES ARE NOT INANIMATE OBJECTS. THEY ARE LIVING, BREATHING, SENSITIVE, AND BEAUTIFUL BEINGS. THIS IS BARBARIC TREATMENT TO OUR LIVING SYMBOLS OF OUR FREEDOM AND HERITAGE!!!!! THEY SHOULD HAVE OUR TOTAL RESPECT AND PROTECTION.

THE RESULTS OF THESE ROUNDUPS CAUSE SUCH TERROR AND HARDSHIP FOR THESE BEAUTIFUL ANIMALS THAT ARE SUCH A PART OF OUR HERITAGE.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THESE HORSES THAT WE ARE NOT ABLE TO SEE . WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE ARE USED FOR THESE ROUNDUPS!! THEY DON’T CARE IF THEY CAUSE DEATH AND INJURY AND THEY USE HARSH METHODS THAT TERRORIZE OUR BEAUTIFUL W I L D HORSES AS THEY LOOSE THEIR THEIR FREEDOM.

STOP THE ROUNDUPS!! WE WANT AN IMPARTIAL INVESTIGATION INTO BLM’S POLICIES AND REASONS FOR THE REMOVALS OF THESE WONDERFUL ICONS OF AMERICA. THE EXPLANATIONS SO FAR DON’T RING TRUE!

PRESIDENT OBAMA, CAN’T YOU PLEASE TAKE AS MUCH CARE AND CONSIDERATION TO THE HORSES AS YOU DID IN PICKING OUT THE FAMILY DOG FOR THE WHITEHOUSE??

  18. Diana Kunce Says:

    IT’S A HEARTLESS OPERATION!

  19. LOUIE COCROFT Says:

THE GOOD THING ABOUT MADELEINE’S TRIP TO THE HOLDING FACILITY IS THAT IT BROUGHT MORE ATTENTION TO IT. I WONDER–WOULD SHE ALSO BE WILLING TO TAKE HER CREW TO THE PALOMINO VALLEY FACILITY? THAT SEEMS TO HAVE DROPPED OFF THE RADAR, AS I CAN’T GET ANY FEEDBACK ON IT. IT IS COLD THERE TOO. LAST WE HEARD THEY HADN’T PUT UP ANY SHELTER OR WIND BREAKS EITHER.

  20. CAT KINDSFATHER Says:

    LOUIE! Yes I am SURE!!!

GO FOR ALL CAPS HERE!! IF IT WAS AN EMAIL, I WOULD SAY NOT TO.
BUT HERE, IN THIS COMMENT TRAIN OF BEWILDERED HEARTBROKEN AND IGNORED WILD HORSE ADVOCATES!! SCREAM IT LOUD ENOUGH TO PIERCE THE EARS OF THE HELICOPTER PILOT!

THESE HORSES ARE BEAUTIFUL ADMIRED ANIMALS SO DESERVING OF OUR CARING LOVE , HONOR AND PROTECTION!!! THE OPERATION IS HEARTLESS!
THEY ARE NOT BOXES OF MERCHANDISE. THEY ARE NOT CASTAWAY GOODS!!
THEY ARE LIVING, SENSITIVE AND BRILLIANT ANIMALS WITH HEARTS AND THOUGHTS, WITH FAMILIES AND FREEDOMS THAT ARE BEING RIPPED FROM THEM FOR NO WRONGS THEY HAVE DONE! THEY NEVER MURDERED ANYONE!

THE TERROR OF THE HELICOPTERS AND RUSHING INTO SHOOTS AND PENS SOME BEING CRUSHED AND BROKEN FROM BEING FORCED BETWEEN THE MASS OF RUSHING HORSES AND DEAD END METAL BAR FENCE IN SMALL SPACE. THEN THEY ARE TORMENTED EVEN FURTHER AS THEY ARE FRIGHTENED BY NOISES AND PADDLES AND EVEN CATTLE PRODS! WHY THE BARBARIC INHUMANITY? THEN SEPARATED FROM EACH OTHER AS FAMILY FOREVER!! EVEN THE FOALS ARE PUSHED AWAY FROM THEIR MOTHERS, THE MARES. THERE ARE WOUNDS AND DEATHS AND BROKEN HEARTS AND SPIRITS. AND KEN SALAZAR SAYS NOT TO DEMONIZE BLM. PLEASE!!!!

THEY HAVE SERVED MAN FOR CENTURIES PAST ON SO MANY LEVELS!! IS THIS THEIR UNJUST REWARD? THERE WILL BE KARMA TO PAY FOR ALL WHO ARE INVOLVED IN THIS TREACHEROUS OPERATION OF ERADICATING OUR WILD HORSE BANDS IN SUCH AN INHUMANE WAY ON TOP OF IT. ALL SHOULD BE CONVICTED OF TERRORISM, ANIMAL ABUSE AND ATTEMPTED, IF NOT ACTUAL MURDER, OF THE PUBLICS BEAUTIFUL ICONS, THE WILD HORSE.

KEEP FIGHTING FOR OUR BEAUTIFUL WILD ONES…….

First, my compliments to the authors for what I believe is their fair and honest reporting. I noticed that time and again we read that the “handlers” with their sticks and bags used quiet, calm, deliberate actions with Freedom in this predicament. Especially in such a heated, emotional discussion it is good to report that those persons involved handled themselves carefully.

Second, this entire report brings to light such a huge set of problems. From overcrowding of mustangs on their land to the use of barbwire in an attempt to contain animals that have no experience with the stuff to the complex issues of the BLM. Clearly, there are no easy solutions. It is heartbreaking to see these animals contained in such a manner. It’s also heartbreaking to read that some of the mares are a bit underweight. As I read the postings I realize that we horse lovers are in a quandary between wanting the horses left alone and not wanting them to starve or suffer. Discussion forums such as this bring forth many topics and opportunities for problem solving. I wish we could get some of our leaders involved.

THIS DISGUST, DISTURBS AND MAKES MY BLOOD BOIL. I DON’T SEE ANY OTHER WILD SPECIES BEING ‘ROUNDED UP’ IN ORDER TO PROTECT THE CATTLE GRAZING LANDS.

MAY ALL CONCERNED INCLUDING THE CATROLLS BURN IN HELL FOR ETERNITY FOR THEIR SINS AGAINST NATURE
    AMEN!

    • Janet Ferguson Says:

Last summer I asked a lady at BLM in Nevada if they “round up” any other wild species.

She said, “how would you feel if there were wild pigs running all over YOUR yard in Missouri!” She compared the horses to the “wild pig” problem in Missouri!

Wild pigs may be protected, as are all wildlife, by Missouri’s Wildlife Code, however, I don’t recall, in this great country, in several major wars, and in our nascient agriculture industry that we were relying on wild pigs to carry us through!

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

Janet, Jaguars have been hunted out mostly by ranchers and government agencies for the protection Of You Guessed it! CATTLE! There is a rancher who had a cat on his ranch in Southern NM some years back. He was not hunting it. The Ladder Ranch. I talked to him as it was before Macho and the first sighting in many years. Even the Mexicans have over hunted them.
It is both countries killing them off. mar

    • InNevada Says:

It is not a cattle grazing lands issue it is a Rangeland Health Issue. Rangelands in the South Western United States have been in place long before the introduction of feral horses by the Spaniards around the time of Cortez. As with many of the introduced species in the United States there are very few predators that will prey on horses and thus a lack in population control without human intervention.

As horse populations increase unchecked the rangelands become over utilized. Springs degrade, forage declines and the rangeland health as a whole begins to dwindle.

If you follow the laws of ecology and look at the big picture it is easy to tease out the triggers that reduce the health of the landscape. There are a variety of factors that may at some time or another lead to a reduction in rangeland health and horse populations that exceed the carrying capasity of the brittle great basin landscapes is undoubtely one of those triggers.

Our landscapes are our lifeblood. Without properly funtioning ecosystems all species will at some point in time suffer. Population control measures are necessisarry in order to maintain the health of our rangelands.

In these discussions I have seen no mention of land stewardship or providing for sustainable management of our public western rangelands, the true wild and free legacy of America.

      • Janet Ferguson Says:

Why are the jaguars only located these days south of TX. It seems like a very strange demarcation considering the similar climate on either side of the TX line.

        Go figure!

      • Janet Ferguson Says:

P.S. “IN THESE DISCUSSIONS” there has been loads of stuff about range management. . . you must not have been reading many of “these discussions.”

        Please do.

      • Marilyn Wargo Says:

In Nevada? Really? I would think you were on the moon. For all the real problems that have occurred in Nevada Wild Horse History you have missed the biggest news. BLM lies and the horses are going, going and may be gone very soon. They have their own lands and BLM and sly and greedy people are running them off illegally. You must be thrilled that they are nearly gone.

You have not read enough, we are behind good management practices. We do talk about change and we have been examining the FACTS for months and even years and decades. Why don’t you try that yourself? I want and believe in changing management practices from the violent methods of today to selective and scientific birth control and predators where they have and can continue to be been effective. The grazing of cattle and the abuse of that privilege on public lands must be stopped. It will take decades to heal. Horses help that healing process. mar

      • Janet Ferguson Says:

Here’s a natural enemy of wild horses: I wonder what cattle people would do if a few of these guys moved a little further north than Macho B made it? Hmmmmm. This is an Endangered Species, and Federally Protected. This is the kind of natural predator of the horse that hasn’t got a snowball’s chance in hell in your lifeblood landscapes.

The inclusion of the United States in the list is based on occasional sightings in the southwest, particularly in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. In the early 1900s, the jaguar’s range extended as far north as the Grand Canyon, and as far west as Southern California.[45] The jaguar is a protected species in the United States under the Endangered Species Act, which has stopped the shooting of the animal for its pelt. In 2004, wildlife officials in Arizona photographed and documented jaguars in the southern part of the state. For any permanent population to thrive, protection from killing, an adequate prey base, and connectivity with Mexican populations are essential.[51] On February 25, 2009 a 118 lb Jaguar was caught, radio-collared and released in an area southwest of Tucson, Arizona; this is farther north than had previously been expected and represents a sign that there may be a permanent breeding population of Jaguars within southern Arizona. It was later confirmed that the animal is indeed the same male individual (known as ‘Macho B’) that was photographed in 2004 and is now the oldest known Jaguar in the wild (approximately 15 years old.)[52] On Monday March 2, 2009, Macho B, which is the only jaguar spotted in the U.S. in more than a decade, was recaptured and euthanized after he was found to be suffering from kidney failure.[53]
Completion of the United States–Mexico barrier as currently proposed will reduce the viability of any population currently residing in the United States, by reducing gene flow with Mexican populations, and prevent any further northward expansion for the species.[54]
The historic range of the species included much of the southern half of the United States, and in the south extended much farther to cover most of the South American continent. In total, its northern range has receded 1000 kilometers southward and its southern range 2000 km northward. Ice age fossils of the jaguar, dated between 40,000 and 11,500 years ago, have been discovered in the United States, including some at an important site as far north as Missouri. Fossil evidence shows jaguars of up to 190 kg (420 lb), much larger than the contemporary average for the animal.[55]

It’s obvious to me that if the horse disappeared approx 8,000 years ago and fossil remains of jaguars existed in the same ranges 40,000 through 11,500 years ago, they surely interfaced as species.

InNevada- “It is not a cattle grazing lands issue it is a Rangeland Health Issue.” I respect your opinion, however, the way for the BLM is handling the the situation is unacceptable. If the rangelands are indeed in danger (and I do not doubt there may be problems) then remove the cattle, too. ALL OF THEM. You can’t have it both ways. If wildlife is suffering due to grazing by horses, then they must also be suffering from grazing by cattle. If you EVER WANT ANY (type) of support from wild horse advocates, then you and other agencies have got to support the removal of cattle. At the very least it will send a message that the environmental organizations supporting the round-ups are looking at the whole picture.
        NO HORSES NO CATTLE.

  24. Monika Courtney Says:

Enough is enough. Cattoor seems to enjoy her immunity under BLM regime and her preposterous accusations once again proof the hopeless mindset she possesses.

One cannot reach results with a corrupt enemy on diplomacy. They will take your finger and rip off your arm. No one within BLM and Cattoor cares about the horses, all they care is save face, demonstrate and enjoy their sick powertrip and love the authority. We are all clowns, extremists and just a nuisance in their operations… a nuisance that observes their ill and cruel driven methods… expressing our concern is not cutting it anymore – we need more – we need to expose the Cattoor woman on national TV – her unprofessional and highly controversial attitude and rudeness towards Madeleine – the unwillingness to cooperate and accomodate at ANY level – enough is enough. These horses are victims of corrupt minds, it’s high times to take this a step further and TELL AMERICA about Cattoor – I do hope Madeleine will do that step – as being diplomatic, open and polite will GO NOWHERE – not with this enemy – same BS they pulled at Pryor MT. or with Steven Long, who requested politely to ride in with the wranglers on horseback… using manipulative and arrogant accusations to build a wall so they can demonstrate their SICK powertrip – enough is enough !!!! Are you mad ? I am – and hope this latest evidence on the mindset of a corrupt and greedy and arrogant Cattoor woman will educate all of us to fight even more to expose the evil they are.

I read through the wonderful “Comments” about Sec. Salazar’s Op-Ed piece in the “L.A. Times” and reported back to my “friends and relatives” that what we should give all of you who responded (including Louie, with his distinctive caps), is a STANDING OVATION – for accurate research, clear writing, passionate delivery, and unwavering devotion to our American wild horses and burros. It is comforting to know that the future of our Democracy is in such good hands. What do you want to bet that Ken Salazar is sitting at home today wondering why on earth he ever did such a dumb thing as write that Op-Ed piece in the first place? You guys shredded and skewered him. Great work!

My prayers and thoughts are with the people of Haiti and the brave people who have courageously gone to help them. Bless you all.

Louie-I sent an email to Deena Lentz Staff Assistant BLM Communications Office to find out about the shelter/windbreaker at the Palamino facility. Not sure she’ll answer but worth a try.

I too would like to know if the downed mare made it out alive. You know they would not stop and would could they do anyway to help her when God knows how many horses were piled in the truck. Does anyone know how they would be able to help a horse that went down in one of these trucks? Thanks.

I am sure you will find this interesting reading. I wrote a long
letter to you here and lost it so will be brief:

This is an epic story of pipelines, cattle, and wild horses playing
out right no on America’s public lands.

Please read about it on this blog and consider writing about this
story — it is history in the making, and the demise of the last wild
        horses in America.

I hope the GMA crew was able to hear, see, and capture the truth of these roundups! Maybe there will be appropriately revealing footage of the BLM and contractors, too. If only they can convey it all in a good investigative report. The BLM/DOI are having a difficult time maintaining their lack of transparency and lack of accountability to the public as more news agencies become involved. They must be feeling the pressure, as many of us have suspected.

  31. jan eaker Says:

There is a new post on R.T.’s site concerning Freedom, the magnificent stallion that escaped from the pens, please read more about this absolutely wonderful horse, please let him be well and free forever,

  32. Cat Kindsfather Says:

I would love to know about “FREEDOM”, the brave beautiful stallion! its a dream to think it will stay free. I think he might just be smart enough and blessed by all or our prayers.

Having been a horse lover all my life, I am so stunned and horrified still in shock by the nightmares that have lived since the Burns Amendment!

BURNED BY THE BURNS AMENDMENT….Time to eradicate it. Restore and purify the 1971 Act.

Has anyone heard about the protest in Reno tomorrow, Monday, Jan 18th?
Its been quiet about it , but I did se it here I think. Now the weather is predicted to be 100% rain and snow. I hope advocates will still turn up!

  33. joyce clark Says:

Quite simply…If there’s a problem with the mustangs’ food supply, why not save these beautiful horses all this anguish, torture, misery and abuse by simply dropping hay off at locations where they normally graze???…put the tax payers money where the mustangs’ mouths are!

  34. Cat Kindsfather Says:

Does anyone know if there was any media at the Reno protest on Monday, Jan. 18th? It snowed like heck Monday and then my car would not start.
I had to call for service which was a lengthy wait and I got to Reno too late. I was informed later at dinner by a stranger that witnessed the protesters, that it did take place. I was told it was a advocate gathering of about 20 people who were well received by honks, if you love horses! Since I missed the whole thing, I spent an hour alone holding up two signs I made for cars passing by to see. It was rewarding, even in the drizzling rain! There were several that slowed down to read them and a few cars had young girls in them, who seemed overjoyed that someone was supporting their beloved wild horses! Their smiles hang on the walls of my horse loving heart.

If anyone has any photos or news of this event, please post it.

  35. mustangdreams / Cat Kindsfather Says:

I am thinking to organize a protest this weekend in Carson City.
I thought. “Why am I waiting for someone else to do it? I guess I thought it should be organized by some advocate organization!! The weather is supposed to have a break Saturday and Sunday! I will try to post the decision and location no later than Wednesday, but hopefully by Tuesday. I will also Tweet it. I am mustangdreams on Twitter. Guess I should facebook it too. Any suggestions, please comment!!! If you have a specific shorter type message for more signs, please tell me!! There was a time I made a living doing lettering, sign painting and design work. So I am excited to get some nice ones made up this week!!! Would love your input! Louie, have you got some ideas? Ay input much appreciated on this entire idea. Thanks!

there is another shot of a Mare and Foal who look exactly like Freedom ! begin herded up; a terrble scene but the same beauty and majesty of Freedom is seen in the galloping Mare and Colt; Freedom has many offspring!

and hopefully many offspring this spring; long live Freedom/ and the other wild horses fortunate to be free!

Cat Kindsfather, YOU ARE THE KIND OF SOFT-HEARTED, TOUGH-MINDED INDIVIDUAL THAT MAKES MOVEMENTS LIKE THIS SO POWERFUL. I AM SORRY THAT YOU ENDED UP HAVING TO DO IT WITHOUT ANY BACK-UP–BUT YOU DID IT ANYWAY! WOW! SOMETIMES THINGS HAPPEN FOR A REASON. YOU NEVER KNOW. PERHAPS YOU WERE MEANT TO REACH SOMEONE OR SOME MORE FOLKS THAT WOULDN’T HAVE SEEN THE PROTEST OTHERWISE.

  41. mustangdreams... Cat Kindsfather Says:

THANKS SO MUCH FOR THAT. I FEEL THE SAME ABOUT YOU!! I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING YOUR COMMENTS. NICE TO HEAR THEM ALL!

TRUE, I REACHED SOME FOLKS THAT WOULD NOT HAVE SEEN ANY PLEAS
OTHERWISE. I WILL NEVER FORGET THE FACES OF THOSE GIRLS. I SAW MYSELF IN THEM. ONE SIGN I HELD SAID, “SAY NEIGH TO BLM” THE OTHER SAID, “STOP THE CALICO ROUNDUPS” THE CALICO ONE WAS ARTY IN INDIAN PAINT COLORS. I AM GOING TO MAKE MORE SIGNS THIS WEEK AND PUT MORE TIME INTO THEM. IF YOU CAN SUGGEST ONE WITH YOUR VIEW OF MAJOR IMPACT, PLEASE SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS. THIS I ASK TO ALL ADVOCATES.

I AM PLANNING A PROTEST GATHERING FOR SUNDAY, IN FRONT OF THE STATE CAPITOL BUILDING, IN CARSON CITY, NEVADA. THE WEATHER IS LOOKING CLEAR FOR THE WEEKEND AND I AM FEELING VERY GOOD ABOUT THIS DECISION.

I HAVE RECRUITED SOME COMMITTED FRIENDS ALREADY AND ONE YOUNG GIRL WHO IS A LITTLE ARTIST AND HORSE LOVER. SHE IS MAKING HER OWN SIGN! I DECIDED NOT TO WAIT FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO PUT ONE TOGETHER IN CARSON CITY AT THE STATE CAPITOL… SO I AM JUST NOW BREAKING THE NEWS HERE IN THIS POST! PLEASE SHARE IT HOWEVER YOU NETWORK.

THE STATE CAPITOL IN ON HIGHWAY 395, ALSO KNOWN AS CARSON STREET, IN CARSON CITY.

I WISH TO MAKE THE ACTIVITY HOURS FROM 1:00 PM TO 3:00 PM.

I AM PRINTING HAND OUT SHEETS WITH NAMES, PHONE NUMBERS AND ADDRESSES FOR PROTESTING THE ROUNDUPS AND CRUEL TREATMENTS TO OUR MAGNIFICENT WILD HORSES. I AM PLANING TO MAKE A FACTS LIST TO PRINT OUT AND HAND OUT ALSO .I HOPE THIS POSTING WILL BRING SOME ADVOCATES!! I AM SO LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS! I WILL COME BACK AND POST THE EXACT ADDRESS FOR THE PROTEST SITE.

LOUIE, TO YOU I SAY THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HEART AND INVOLVEMENT. YOU ARE GREAT!

    >

    • Anne Says:

      Hey Sue? guess what “dear…”you are busted ! and here is why ? YOU are “hunting wild horses yourselves the Cattmoor co. is and that is why you will be stopped; YOU take living wild horses and you trap them in a trap;
this is another name for hunting; trapping is “hunting:

      and here is what you do Sue and BLM; You take healthy well fed horses FROM the plains and mountains; valleys;

and then you force the horses to go with NO FEED for up to 24 hours; then you transport them in a truck for 4 hours with no feed or water; then if any Wild Mustang Stallion; Mare or Foal; should not like the new hay; and if the Stallion Mare or Foal won’t eat their new hay ?

what do you do ? DO YOU IV THEM A LIQUID NUTRITIONAL HORSE FORMULA TO SAVE THEIR LIVES?
      NO
Do you give them special foal lac pellets or fortified feed with essential vitamins to get their systems going ?
No; Do you atleast give them a Vitamin B-Complex shot to stimulate their appetites such as I did with foal in OR
who was able to drink milk after ten days of no feed and she is alive and well today: living beautifully on a farm:
NO ! Question: Does the BLM give sick Foals Milk substitute? to keep them alive ? not that I know of…
Does the BLM put hay in front of sick horses NO; if the animal is too sick to walk to hay; this is what they do
so what does Sue Cattmoor and BLM crew do to “wild starving horses who will not eat the new hay ?

      1. they let the downed horses who will not eat due to stress; which can be alleviated with certain “nutrients:
LAY THERE IN THE PENS FOR DAYS !
      2. and then if the horse will not eat after a few days;

sue takes the horse out back; and “shoots the horse !

      and the horses perishes on the spot;

and then the BLM trucks the horse to a nearby rendering plant; which is conveniently located near Fallon

SO SUE CATTAMOOR TRAPS (Hunts) Wild horses and keeps them in pens; and any starving horse who will not eat; GETS SHOT : so cattamoor BLM hunts and shoots wild horses; go see for yourself; they shot atleast 7 Mares atleast one stallion and they just shot a foal !

      I recently reported this to Rep. Jim Himes; co sponsor Horses bills; Sue Cattamor also “shot a mare who had a foal; the foals name is Trooper; then Sue changed her story; and said the Mare did not have a foal;

so almost every day the BLM shoots another horse !

sue cattamor to any starving horse; “bang! see ya horse

anne of conn. to sue: sue? “Run around Round Up Sue ?

      you are hiss…tory ! I cannot let you continue your insanity of saying the BLM saves starving horses when the truth is you and the BLm starve horses purposely;

LIKE THE PIX OF THE FOAL LYING ALONE WITH NO FEED
like the way there is no shelter for the foal for days; the foal lying there for 3 days with no attention in misery

AND A RESCUE WANTED TO ADOPT THE FOAL; and the Blm told the rescue; wait ; the foal is fine ; no need to rescue AND THEN THE BLM ACTUALLY SHOT THIS FOAL !

this just happened this week and the rescue is devestated and so am I; to leave a foal lying in misery with no feed; no water; no shelter for 3 days and have the BLM say: the foal is fine (on the phone to the rescue
and then actually “shoot the foal; BLM? U ARE BUSTED !

signed: Anne hadley Conn. usa ps do not copy this to Sue; I want sue to be surprised when they close her down; we must stop this before this spreads to other wildlife; this is a horse selling scheme; thanks for the info

  43. Monika Courtney Says:

    Mrs. Cattoor:

You are hired by a corrupt outfit. Therefore no one is impressed with your employer.
The wildlife assumption of yours to reduce numbers does not apply to the wild horses, as wildlife did not fall under a 1971 protection act nor was it granted millions of acres to be preserved. Do not confuse hunting and wildlife with a federally protected species, for which a BLM agency was assigned to protect and not exploit. Population numbers of wildlife falls into a different category. Your naïve assumptions to think anyone would buy your lame attempt at coming up with a credible excuse for your deplorable practices are an insult to anyone’s intelligence. Your “job” as you call it, is in absolute NO course of action HUMANE in any way. I witnessed the round up on Labor day at Pryor Mt. and saw the deplorable and arrogant attitude at Britton Springs. You tried hard to look respectable in this highly publicized event. Yet, you are not deceiving any of us who know the cruelty any round up inflicts to the horses. Your view of humane is a misleading egotistic description of income. Any exploitative method of harming animals, no matter how it takes place, is not humane. You are a disgrace to even consider any round up to be humane. This proves how you can not distinguish reality from fiction that you create yourself to save your image. Your lies and deceptive agenda are just a mirror image of the same propaganda with which the BLM has gotten away with for too long. You also don’t seem to have the slightest knowledge on the history and value of the mustangs to this nation. You will never convince the majority with your preposterous ideas. They make no sense. People such as yourself are so driven with the goal to make money, they don’t see beyond that. But public pressure demands a certain image, doesn’t it ? Just the simple fact that you operate such a business is plain evidence that you are as corrupt as the BLM – since you seemingly have not a clue.
When will the never-ending whining of “starvation” or “dying of thirst” ever be replaced by the logic that with their habitats being stolen by the millions of acres, it is ONLY a logical consequence they have NOWHERE TO GO ??? When does any of you blinded by greed people ever express concern for the livestock who grazes on those lands now ? Where is the scientific evidence for your gather frenzies ? 19 million acres, on which wild horses and burros roamed at the time of passage of the 1971 Act, taken by BLM… How do you explain this loss of range ? And the fabrication of “deterioration of range” etc. is a continuous poor example of a failed credibility of a BLM and a Cattoor outfit, who steals the mustangs’ freedom with a gross misconduct under the guise of “management”. You have no integrity. When will the fictional statement of “excess” horses ever be replaced by the veritable fact that they preserve themselves just fine in the wild as they have for centuries, before a corrupt BLM and an even more corrupt Cattoor outfit got away with irreparable damage to their survival, and a future on their rightful public lands, where they belong BY LAW ? Is your company also a private beneficiary of livestock interests ? How about stocks in the alternative energy exploration industry ?
I have to agree with Congressman Grijalva’s statement in his letter of August 28th, 2009, that wild horse round ups aren’t benign affairs. The use of helicopters and other methods causes EXTREME stress, which can end in death or severe injury. I have seen the exhausted foal that collapsed afterwards, and limped – but your routine is methodical, you can’t see this inhumanity anymore. It’s just a business to you. Like you say, you make money… and the horses pay the price for your outrageous and egotistic claims. As far as your statement about BLM not selling horses to slaughter.. the truth remains to be seen – we all know that neither you nor BLM are trustworthy sources of information.
What might have once started in the Cattoor family as a way of creating income like we all do… working… turned into a highly profitable business… where you tap into the resources of a corrupt Bureau, with even more lame and corrupt leaders. Rest assured, not all people buy your story. But from someone like you who has come to believe her own lies over the years it is not surprising that your first and utmost priority is to preserve your image, not the wild horses.

    IN ANSWERING THE COMMENT ABOVE ABOUT OVERUSE OF RANGE LANDS, I WOULD POINT TO THE NATIONAL ACADAMY OF SCIENCES THAT PUT FORTH THE REPORT SHOWING WILD HORSES ACCOUNTING FOR L E S S T H A N 5% O F G R A Z I N G O N P U B L I C
L A N D S. OUR WILD HORSES AND BURROS ARE N O T THE CAUSE OF ANY PROBLEMS OF OVERUSE OF OUR RANGE LANDS.

  45. Sandra Miller Says:

No, it is a cattle grazing issue, InNevada. Please go to American Herds, http://americanherds.blogspot.com/ and study “The Thriving Natural Ecological Balance: a Comparative Analysis of Free Roaming Wild Horses and Burros in Relation to Habitat, Wildlife, and Livestock Populations” by C.R. McDonald, October 2009. You will discover in easy to visualize pie charts that in comparison to other wildlife and livestock in particular, the wild horse and burro population is very small in each of the ten western states containing wild horse and burro ranges. We are not simple minded, you know. Of course rangeland health is a basic issue, but what is chomping on that range, in what total numbers and degree of destruction to its surroundings, seriously impacts the health of the range itself. The wild horses and burros are not numerous enough in comparison to livestock, in particular, to be causing serious impact. In regard to predators, the wild horses and burros have many – bear, wolf, mountain lion, to name a few – but agricultural interests make sure they are shot on sight. The wild horses and burros, like the wolves and the bison, have been in the cross hairs of agricultural interests for the last 100 years, at least. IF the American consumer benefited from agricultural use of our Public Lands in these modern times, that would be more acceptable, but did you know that less that 3% of our nation’s beef is produced by our public rangelands? In addition, the whole grazing program is heavily subsidized with taxpayer money! If the American people, who own the Public Lands and the wild horses and burros, decide that we want the wild horses and burros on those lands, as we decided in 1971 with the Wild Free-roaming Horse and Burro Act, then that is the way it will be! The scapegoating of the horses and burros will no longer work. It certainly IS, as I said at the beginning, a cattle grazing issue.

  46. Grant Burtt Says:

The American people have fallen you are parted you must be together once again and stop quibling aver small issues that seperate you if these horses become extinct the people are next..

This is all about BIG CORPORATIONS DESTROYING AMERICA.
next on the chopping block are the people .
dont beleive do you. Revolt against your government. Or we will not survive.
